Wolfgang Petersen To Direct Remake Of German Bank Robbery Pic

5 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

Wow, it's hard to believe that it's been nearly a decade since we've had a film from Wolfgang Petersen. The director, who was once Hollywood's go to blockbuster filmmaker, flopped hard in 2006 with "Poseidon," and hasn't been heard from since. But he's now gearing up to mount his first German language film since his breakout "Das Boot." Screen Daily reports that Petersen will helm a redo of the 1976 German TV movie "Vier gegen die Bank," which was based on Ralph Maloney’s 1972 novel "The Nixon Recession Caper." The story revolves around four men who decide to solve their financial woes by robbing a bank. Here's the book synopsis:  Four men of substance, all living the glossy life of Connecticut exurbanites, suddenly find themselves jobless and moneyless. What to do? Since it's a bigger disgrace to be broke in this town than to be crooked, the obvious solution is to rob a bank. »

Fox’s statement regarding MyNetwork comes as Tribune Broadcasting and the CW are in the midst of hammering out a new affiliation deal to succeed the contract that expires next fall.

There had been speculation that some of Fox’s MyNetwork affiliates might try to switch to CW if Tribune and the CW could not come to terms. But at present sources say Tribune and CW have started to engage in substantive talks and both sides expect a deal to be done.

Starz Misses Earnings, Revenue Marks in Q3

19 minutes ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

Starz didn’t quite reach the moon with its third quarter financial results. Wall Street had forecast Q3’s earnings per share to come in at $0.59 on $422.62 million in revenue, according to Yahoo Finance. Zack’s concurred with the Eps. However, Starz whiffed on both metrics. The premium TV company posted Eps of $0.56 on $59.5 million in profit. Revenue was $404.1 million. That net income — and thus, the corresponding earnings per share — are up versus the same 90-day period last year. The sales figure is down a few million bucks from 2014, though. How long has this plan been in the works?

We’ve been talking about this since last spring, actually. We just need to make sure that everything was in place, that the team was good, that we had our new Cmo, that we got through the fall launch. Now’s a pretty good time as we’ve launched the fall, but we still have midseason on the horizon. »

Halloween treat: Top 13 scariest Oscar movies of all time (Photo Gallery)

In honor of Halloween, let's look back at those horror films that have been honored by Oscar with wins or nominations. True the motion picture academy has only occasionally embraced one of the most successful film genres. But a handful of performances that made our blood run cold proved to be red-hot with Oscar voters. -Break- The first frightfest to scare up an Oscar was "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1932). Fredric March tied for Best Actor (with "The Champ" star Wallace Beery) for his chilling portrayal of a scientist whose experiments turn him into a raving lunatic. The most recent was "Black Swan" (2010). Natalie Portman won Best Actress for her performance as a ballerina whose obsession with "Swan Lake" drives her insane.  Below, take a tour of the 13 spine-chillers that scared up Oscar nominations.  Photo: Anthony Perkins in "Psycho." Film Review: ‘The Middle Distance’

44 minutes ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

An arrogant Los Angeles business consultant with a penchant for whisky and one-night stands gets a comeuppance of sorts — and ultimately regains a piece of his soul — when he returns to his Midwest roots to deal with his estranged father’s estate. Although Patrick Thomas Underwood’s “The Middle Distance” has a familiar, formulaic feel and banal, wannabe-snappy dialogue, it’s cleanly shot, it moves at a decent clip and its snow-covered landscapes are mighty attractive. Although unlikely to go the distance outside fests and VOD, it should serve as a useful calling card for its debuting director.

In the middle of the winter, glib workaholic Neil (Ross Partridge) receives a call from his younger brother, James (Kentucker Audley), asking him to come and help sell the family’s summer cottage by the lake in New Buffalo, Mich. There he meets his brother’s petite, perky fiancee, Rebecca (Joslyn Jensen »

From niche start-ups offering hyper-local content to deep-pocketed tech giants with pan-African aspirations, the continent’s VOD race is heating up as new players look to tap into a potential audience of 1 billion African consumers.

According to consultancy firm Balancing Act, more than 100 VOD platforms are now staking their claims to the African marketplace, though most so far have focused on single-territory or regional markets.

“The strongest ones, the most serious ones, are in South Africa right now,” says Balancing Act’s Sylvain Beletre. “The groups behind them have strong finances, or strong assets in terms of rights.”

South Africa sizzled this summer, with Naspers’ ShowMax and Pccw’s ONTAPtv jockeying for position with DStv’s BoxOffice ahead of Netflix’s expected arrival in 2016, as the tech giant pursues its aggressive global expansion plan.

Audiences so far are relatively small: just 6% of African online traffic is video, according to the Sandvine Global Internet Phenomena Report, »
