DeRenda Warren of Smyer has declared her candidacy for the Texas’ 19th U.S. Congressional District.
She will make her formal announcement at 11 a.m. Monday outside the Hockley County courthouse in Levalland.
Warren is the administrator and director of nursing at BrightStar. She has nearly 30 years of experience in the medical field after receiving her nursing degree in 1984 from Texas Tech, she said.
She will run as a Republican.
Warren said she got into politics when she started thinking about her grandchildren and their future. She said her experience in medicine and her history growing up in a farming community makes her qualified and understanding of the needs of this district.
“Something has to change,” she said. “When you look at my resume, that’s what I do. I go in and I get people working together to get things accomplished.”
If elected, a few of the issues she intends to focus on are simplifying the farm bill and taking care of veterans.
U.S. Rep. Randy Neugebauer, R-Lubbock, announced in September that he will not seek re-election in 2016. Warran joins a growing list of candidates.
