Square Enix Files Trademarks For Rise Of Mana And Slimeshot

By Spencer . June 17, 2013 . 11:49pm

imageSquare Enix might be working on a new Mana game? A trademark for Rise of Mana filed by Square Enix Japan suggests that’s the case, but the game may not be a full blown Mana title. Rise of Mana could be a localized version of Circle of Mana, a social game released by GREE in Japan.

A day earlier, Square Enix registered a trademark for Slimeshot which is most likely a localized version of an iOS game where you flick a slime to collect coins. Both games are available in Japan for iOS and Android devices.

could be a mobile game huh? man you just had to kill the hype didn’t you -_-
but SE did have a good run at E3, its restored my faith in them a little
and they don’t really have much planned for handheld consoles either so here’s hoping

  • Warboss Aohd

would kill fer a new mana game…….but a social game iz a no no…..as well as not usin’ da Special Mana art style, like wit’ Legend of Mana an’ Such, none o’ dat re-used art styles we see everywhere.

    • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

You know, Hiro Isono (Mana series artist) died of heart failure last week.

      • Warboss Aohd

While that was sad to hear, he wasn’t the artist for Legend of Mana, Shinichi Kameoka and Koji Tsuda. are.

        • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Aha, ok. Thanks for clearing that up.

  • Lazulis

    So excite until Gree…

  • Ouch My Head Said Dionysus

Of course it’s going to be Gree. When was the last respectable Mana game? 13 years ago?

    • landlock

I actually really liked the PS2 game it was different but still a lot of fun.

      • Eilanzer

nah…androgynous as hell…without focus on something to make the title stand out =/

  • epy

    I want to believe…

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    faceplam……gree….

    • Anime10121

Lol faceplam, sounds way more painful than faceplam ;)

      • ShawnOtakuSomething

slamming my head on a tree from this news X_X

  • $36598391

Please don’t be another social game for cellphones….
also that artwork of the fairy looks very good

  • CirnoLakes

Eh, Kingdom Hearts 3 and Final Fantasy XV are probably the most they’re going to really give people for the next ten years.

    It’ll be an iOS game.

    • Anime10121

I agree, I’ll add in XV’s sequels, but yeah pretty much that. Though I’m not complaining, those are two of my most anticipated titles of the next gen!

    • puchinri

That made me sad. I never considered that, but since you said it, I believe it. I really hope not though. I mean, I’d at least like another Chocobo title similar to the Wii and DS ones.

  • HassanJamal

Rise of Mana, i can dig that. Just please dont be a Cellphone game, k SE?

  • Anime10121

Heh, is it weird that before you even mentioned mobile, that it was the first thing to pop into my head when I saw “Square Enix trademarks”? :(

  • https://twitter.com/BinksFrost Binks5

It is sad that I know ahead of time not to bring my hopes up whenever I see squeenix mentionned. A new mana game would be pretty sweet but I dont see it happening not anytime soon at least

    • Sylveria

I always get that brief glimmer of hope when I see Square Enix, but then I remember what year it is and quickly dismiss that since I now know that something interesting sounding from Square is quickly followed by “iOS” or “Mobile.”

  • alangato

Wow, Rise of Mana sounds like something more serious…maybe a 3ds game???

When they trademarked CIRCLE of Mana I think it was really obvious that it would end up being a social game lol.

    • Eilanzer

don´t go too fast on your dream and hope my friend…SE + games = 90% ios crap these days =/

      • alangato

Hehe, I know, but I hope this 10% include a new Mana xD, maybe they would even work with that new studio that some people from brownie bron formed…

        • Eilanzer

a new mana game would be perfect for this new console generation…Well a good one…not an androgynous mana again =.=”

  • Space_Ghost

Hopefully it is a full blown RPG for consoles. The Wii U needs some nice JRPG’s.

    • alangato

The Wii U really need THAT support from SE, DQ X was not enough…I’m hoping they will at least give us a game by Kawazu, seriously, he can’t be locked on a basement… and who knows, maybe a FF 6 full remake made by Hiroyuki Ito team?! hehe

    • yellowmage

Hopefully they’re working on a new Crystal Chronicles game as we type. Hopefully one that, if it’s story-driven like Ring of Fates and Crystal Bearers, features a non-Clavat main protagonist. Preferably a Yuke.

      • Space_Ghost

We are doing a lot of hoping ;)

  • piichan

Oh..gree…After creating world of mana, they never really made any other games after Heroes. So unless this becomes a huge announcement, it’s most probably just a mobile game.

  • http://www.gamefaqs.com/features/recognition/21421.html?type=4 Kashell

If this Mana is anything like Heroes, Dawn, or Children, I will burn 100 trees outside of Square’s HQ in protest.

  • Testsubject909

This reminds me. I need to schedule another day with my friends. We’re doing a 3 player coop play through Secret of Mana… One of the two buddies I’ll be playing with has never played Secret of Mana. The other never finished Secret of Mana.

  • Kamakuma

Quick questions for you guys… I’ve never played the mana games. ;_; Would you recommend them for a derp like me?

    • Sebastian Lothian

They were fun. I played Legend of Mana for hours, and it takes at least 3 playthroughs to see all of the main storylines.

    • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Secret of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 2) was amazing, Seiken Densetsu 3 (which you can only play in English through emulation) was even better. Legend of Mana was a step back in my opinion, it lacked a true plot and instead was a conglomerate of subplots with several characters that were important to the World as a whole~.

Sword of Mana was a remake / reimagined version of the first Seiken Densetsu (first released on the GB under the name of Final Fantasy Adventures). It’s a good game but pales in comparison to the two SNES games and the story leaves a bit to be desired compared to the one of the GB game. Basically, sometimes trying to reinvent the wheel isn’t for the best~.

Oh and the DS game is terrible~.

      • yellowmage

There are two DS games. Children of Mana is pretty fun; full of the bright colours and charm that is so emblematic of the series. True, the dungeon-crawling gameplay can get a little monotonous, but the art style and soundtrack go a long way.

Meanwhile, Heroes of Mana is OK if it’s your first RTS, and proved how well the genre can work on the DS. Plus, it’s a prequel to SD3.

        • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Oh? I was only aware of the pseudo strategy game, I never heard of the other. I’ll look into it even if I no longer own a DS. Maybe someday I’ll stomach buying a 3DS and if I do I’ll want to try Children of Mana~.

    • Merrick

8 days late but I might voice my opinion as well. Final Fantasy Adventure was quite good and its field ability system was a highlight. Secret of Mana was very good with its excellent boss battle music, its large and long adventure and very well done battle system. Personally my favorite, though, may be the Legend of Mana. I loved the game so much. I really got into the art style, and the customization aspects of the world. I also really liked the way battles were done in the game.

Personally, considering the reputation that the Secret of Mana game has had I would definitely dive into that one. I would also recommend the game that could be called the Westernized spin-off called Secret of Evermore. It is very similar to SoM but with some differences also.

  • yellowmage

It might be another remake of the first game, like Sword of Mana, which was good, but the translation was… shall we say, awkward in some places.

  • Tiduas

This has to be it, pleeeeaaaase Square-Enix!
