mima has positioned itself nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence for exhibiting and collecting modern and contemporary art, garnering national and international acclaim and putting Middlesbrough on the map.

mima has had nearly 1 million visits since it opened on January 27, 2007. This includes over 50,000 people who have engaged in educational events.

Exhibitions have combined major shows by acclaimed artists such as Louise Bourgeois, Edmund de Waal, Anish Kapoor and David Lynch along with group and themed shows.

On 1 September 2014 the management of mima transferred to Teesside University, with Middlesbrough Council remaining a key partner. mima is honoured to recieve grant funding from Arts Council England as a National Portfolio Organisation and is proud to be a partner in the Plus Tate network.

mima continues to develop Middlesbrough’s art collection with major grants from Art Fund International, Northern Rock Foundation and Art Fund Collect allowing mima to collect post-war American art, ceramics and jewellery.

mima believes in working in partnership to achieve success and has developed partnerships with Tate (as part of the Tate Plus network) and The Drawing Centre, New York among others.
