Known as ‘Gigi', Datome made his senior debut for Italy against Croatia in 2007 and appeared at EuroBasket in 2007, 2011 and 2013, where he was team captain. He entered 2015 with 121 total appearances and has also previously appeared at U16, U18 and U20 levels. A junior player at Santa Croce Olbia, he moved to Serie A with Siena where he won the Italian league and Supercoppa under Simone Pianigiani. With Roma, he was named the league's Best Under-22 player in 2009 and league MVP in 2013. Originally switching to the NBA on a two-year deal with the Detroit Pistons, he was traded to the Boston Celtics in February, making his first NBA start in their season-ender against Milwaukee, prior to joining Fenerbahce in July.
