The Grange SEN School

Project: The Grange SEN School
Capital Value: £14.5M
Client: Manchester City Council
Procurement: Framework 109
Contractor: Willmott Dixon
Architect: Ellis Williams Architects

A dedicated ASD specialist school this New Build project was required to provide flexible, responsive yet controlled learning predominantly for children with autistic spectrum disorder (ASD). This provided many challenges including balancing daylight and natural lighting contrasts, free access & security and also the wide ranging acoustic implications of ASD.

The project met all aspects of MCC’s Guide to Development (G2D2) with 25% improvement in CO2 emissions over Part L of the Building Regulations (2010) and 20% provision of on site renewable energy sources.  Strategic advice from BCM enabled the team to meet these very challenging targets within traditional cost parameters.

  • First class learning facility specializing in ASD
  • Easily manageable environment for staff & pupils
  • Achieves good daylight factor
  • No cost premium for Building or M&E
  • Meets 2010 Part L and Manchester’s new Red Book standards
  • Achieves compliance with Planning requirements
  • BREEAM Very Good
  • Low running costs
