Hoyland Healthcare Centre (LIFT), Barnsley

Value: £3.8m
Client: Morgan Sindall
Architect: P&HS

The Hoyland LIFT health centre comprises a 2 storey 3080M2 (rooftop plantroom) state of the art health centre with doctor's surgeries, operating theatres and community facilities.

The brief for this project was particularly challenging as the PCT required the building to be comfort cooled and BREEAM excellent.

This project was the eighth project in a 5 year LIFT programme and brought together all the benefits of the lessons learned over the previous 7 projects undertaken in 3 tranches of work.

BCM are the only members of Morgan Sindall's design team to have worked on all 8 of the Barnsley LIFT projects. This is a testament to BCM's ability to bring continual improvement to the design of the schemes.

The initial designs comprised wet heating systems and ventilation via opening windows which were the conventional solution in 2005. The tranche 2 schemes had developed to use heat pumps in the design with the heating provided via underfloor heating systems.

The challenge of producing a BREEAM Excellent and comfort cooled environment meant that further development was required. BCM led the design team through a detailed option appraisal process using our Dynamic Simulation Modelling expertise to inform the team of the options.

The resulting design selected for this project incorporated heat pumps (air source) using an all air heating and cooling system, ventilation with heat recovery controlled by air quality sensors. As we had to provide comfort cooling, we have designed a solution that removes heat from the areas requiring cooling and injected that heat in to the hot water systems. This enhances the energy efficiency of the building.
