Standards

Over a decade ago the European Committee for Standardisation (Comite Europeen de Normalisation (CEN) were given the task by the European Union to develop standards for solid biofuels, including wood. Technical Committee 335 was created which then developed the technical standards (TS) that defined terminology, specification, fuel quality assurance, sampling and testing of fuel properties. Over time these TS’s have been revised and developed to replace all other national standards within the EU (such as ONORM and DIN).

These standards now allow woody biomass fuels to be specified accurately by their properties of size, moisture content, ash content, form (logs, pellets, wood chips) and by the origin or their constituent raw materials.
