A New Platform

We are building a new and more flexible technology platform for JSTOR. We are incredibly excited about this as it will give JSTOR and our partners the flexibility we need to continue to innovate and to remain one of the most highly used and valued online resources for research and teaching.

Our approach to transitioning to the new platform has been to make the shift largely behind the scenes, while simplifying and improving the site experience in small ways. Much of this platform migration is already complete.

During the remainder of 2015, we will be making a number of more visible updates to the JSTOR platform. Check back here to track work completed and see what’s coming next.

Service Alert for Ezproxy

Service Update - October 26, 2015

We have had reports from users encountering the following message when attempting to download JSTOR PDFs at institutions using EZproxy:

“Error loading content - There was a problem processing your request. Please try again later.”

If you are encountering this problem, please check your proxy configurations:

+ The first line of the config file should begin with: HTTPHeader X-Requested-With (as seen here):

https://www.oclc.org/support/services/ezproxy/documentation/db/jstor.en....

+ If updating that line does not fix the problem, please check your proxy version to make sure it is the most up-to-date version:

https://www.oclc.org/support/services/ezproxy/documentation/download-ezp...

This may require a restart of your proxy server to take effect.

Upcoming Changes

Shibboleth Updates, action required:

As a part of our overall platform transition, we are excited to announce that JSTOR is moving from a SAML 1.0 to SAML 2.0 in the month of October.

To facilitate this transition, we are also required to rollout a new SP:

The new SP is now available through your federation metadata. Please coordinate with your technical staff and your federation to begin making this transition as soon as possible. We intend to discontinue support of our current SP on October 30, 2015. We recognize that this is a short window for transition.

Recent Changes

Usage Statistics:

2015 COUNTER 4 reports are available at https://www.jstor.org/analytics/. However, COUNTER 3 reports for 2014 are now available only upon request from JSTOR Support. Reports for 2013 and previous years are no longer available.

Saved and Tracked Citations:

The existing Save Citation feature has been replaced with new citation export and sharing options. Previously saved citations are no longer be accessible via a MyJSTOR account and the Saved Citations page has been removed. If you did not export previously saved citations and need them, please contact JSTOR Support. Until the end of 2015, the support team can email your previously saved citations to you, upon request.

The new and improved citation management options include preformatted citations in multiple styles (MLA, APA, and Chicago), exporting of citations in formats compatible with common citation management software, and social sharing options that enable both emailing and sharing of article links via social channels.

The Track Citations feature has been removed.

Saved Searches & Search Alerts:

The Saved Search feature and alerts are no longer available.

Individual Article Purchases
(Publisher Sales Service):

Individual article and issue sales have been temporarily suspended while we migrate the service to the new platform.

Other Completed Work

Display of journal content:

New journal landing and table of contents pages for all titles, including improved journal URLs (previous URLs redirect automatically) and new display of journal title histories, which shows prior and subsequent titles at part of each journal’s bibliographic information.

Books:

An improved books experience that mirrors the way journals are treated on the site (including a clear presentation of key user functions like capturing citations and downloading PDFs, and an improved online chapter viewing experience). A “Search within a Book” feature was introduced.

Linking-related changes:

Several linking features were removed for reconsideration. These include: most cited and cited by links, Current Issues linking, Google Scholar links, RSS journal issue feeds. These features may be introduced later after some re-thinking and testing with users to improve the approach.

Searching:

A new search index and search code were released in 2014, and improvements to the speed of searching were released earlier in 2015. Searches are significantly faster and search relevance has been improved.

The display of search results were revised to include text snippets that show the context of search keywords in the text.
