What about Jon Snow? First footage from Game Of Thrones season six reveals emotional Daenerys and Cersei's new do

Last season ended in one of the most shocking deaths in television history.

And fans of Game Of Thrones have been salivating for any hint of what will happen when the popular series returns.

Luckily diehards got a very small taste of what to expect from the upcoming season of the show based on the George R.R. Martin book series in a video posted by HBO's Twitter on Sunday.

The network posted a nearly three-minute clip recapping all of their programmes in 2015 but those who kept watching were in for a treat as some new footage was sprinkled in at the end.

About four seconds of new Game Of Thrones footage could be seen in the video but even with a sample size so small there were a few very interesting things to note.

First there is a shot of Daenerys Targaryen, played by Emilia Clarke, looking emotional while standing by a lake.

Then it cuts to Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon) riding a horse with his men as he was last seen destroying Stannis Baratheon's (Stephen Dillane) entire camp in the penultimate episode of season five.

Lastly, arguably the biggest reveal came when Lena Hedley's character Cersei Lannister was shown with a brand new pixy haircut.

Perhaps even more surprising was when Cersei grabbed a hold of Tommen Baratheon's neck bringing him in for an embrace in a rare showing of motherly affection.

No doubt the question surrounding the series the most is whether or not beloved character Jon Snow, played by Kit Harrington, is really dead and that was predictably not answered in this promotional clip.

Earlier this week, there were seemingly more questions than answers as a teaser was released on Thursday by HBO that showed the Lord Commander of the Night's Watch standing regally, before quickly flashing to what appeared to be his bleeding corpse from the finale.

Meanwhile, a voiceover by the Three Eyed Raven (Isaac William Hempstead) could be heard saying: 'The past is already written. The ink is dry.'

Jon can be seen standing in his Lord Commander garb in the teaser, his long hair blowing in the wind as he stares ahead, looking worried - reminiscent of footage from his exit from the battle with the White Walkers, featured in season five episode Hardhome.

'We watch. We listen, and we remember,' the voiceover says, along with the shots of the fallen leader, who is widely rumoured to be returning this season.

Is he back? The new footage did not reveal anything about Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) but a teaser released earlier this week reveals him standing regally in his Lord Commander garb

A clue to his fate? At the end of the clip Bran can be seen with warg eyes, which could relate to the fate of Jon Snow, as many think he survives by warging into his Direwolf, Ghost

However, as the Three Eyed Raven says 'the ink is dry,' the video's pace quickly changes and it cuts to a shot of Jon being brutally stabbed, calling back to the devastating season five finale.

The unforgettable moment is followed by flashbacks to the deaths of Ned (Sean Bean), Catelyn (Michelle Fairley), and Robb Stark (Richard Madden), as well as when Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) goes blind.

One of the few remaining Starks - Sansa (Sophie Turner) can be seen in the flashback, in the moment she shared a kiss with Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen).
