Spyglass® Visualization System

The goal at Lakewood Hospital’s Digestive Health Center is to provide the latest technological advancements and cutting-edge treatments, raising the bar for patient care. The newest addition to the center is the Spyglass® Visualization System, a minimally invasive endoscopic technique that gives physicians direct views into a patient’s biliary system, which includes the bile duct, pancreas and liver.

Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a test where the entire length of the colon is examined by using a lighted flexible tube with a camera at one end. If the physician finds polyps, which are small growths on the inner wall of the intestine and can be precancerous, they can be removed during the procedure.

Colorectal cancer, commonly referred to as colon cancer, is one of the most curable types of cancer, when it is detected in its early stages. More than 150,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in the United States each year. Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of death in the nation.

Sigmoidoscopy

A sigmoidoscopy is an internal examination of the lower third of the colon, using an instrument called a sigmoidoscope. The sigmoidoscope is a small camera attached to a flexible tube. It is inserted into the colon to examine the rectum, and the sigmoid and descending portions of the colon. It is similar to a colonoscopy, but the exam usually views only to the sigmoid, the left side of the colon.

Endoscopic Ultrasound

This is a relatively new technique that is useful in diagnosing and staging cancers and other disorders of the esophagus, stomach, pancreas, rectum and disorders of the bile duct.
