LA PINE, Ore. – A La Pine horse owner had to euthanize his mare named Princess after two pit bulls attacked and seriously injured the animal Wednesday.

The horse was in a fenced pasture when the pit bulls, named Bailey and Bully, escaped from a fenced area nearby and attacked, according to the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office.

The horse owner, Richard Beck, fired a warning shot to scare the dogs away, but the male pit bull named Bully kept attacking, he told sheriff's deputies. Beck shot and killed the dog.

The owner of the pit bulls, Tony Maxwell, was cited for two counts of killing, wounding or injuring livestock. He surrendered his other dog, Bailey, to the Humane Society of Central Oregon.

The sheriff's office said Beck discharged his firearm in a safe manner and was protecting his horse.
