The concert is sponsored by the MacDowell Music Club of Canton, with additional funding from the National Endowment for the Arts.
A pre-concert lecture will be held at 7:00 p.m., led by University of Maryland graduate student Elizabeth Yackley. Yackley has committed her graduate work to researching the formation and history of MacDowell Music Clubs as a national music movement. As always, this preconcert lecture is free to all ticketholders.
The concert will begin at 8:00 p.m., conducted by Music Director Gerhardt Zimmermann will feature the Piano Concerto No. 2 by Edward MacDowell, the Academic Festival Overture by Johannes Brahms, and Franz Schubert's Symphony No. 9 in C Major, "The Great."
MacDowell Music Club
The MacDowell Music Colony was founded in Peterborough, NH by Marian MacDowell, the wife of the famous composer, shortly before his death in 1908. Several music clubs in his name had already been formed, performing his works and others in regular monthly recitals by members. Following Edward MacDowell's death, pianist Marian MacDowell travelled the country, performing her husband's music, and helping to found several hundred local MacDowell Music Clubs. A few dozen of MacDowell Clubs remain to this day, and some of the most active are in Ohio.
In addition to MacDowell's most recognized works (including the ever-popular "To a Wild Rose" for solo piano), MacDowell composed two piano concertos, two orchestral suites, four symphonic poems, four piano sonatas, piano suites, and songs.
Kotaro Fukuma
Fukuma last appeared with the Canton Symphony in December of 2004 when he performed "Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini" by Rachmaninoff. In 2003, he was the winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition.
Born in Tokyo in 1982 to a family mainly comprised of non-musicians, Fukuma was fascinated with the sound of piano music from an early age. He began his piano studies at the age of five in Japan. After graduating from a public high school in Japan, Mr. Fukuma entered the Paris Conservatory in 2001, where he studied piano with Bruno Rigutto and chamber music with Marie-Francoise Bucquet.?In 2005, Kotaro earned the First Prize of the Paris Conservatory and entered the Berlin University of Arts, where he currently studies with Klaus Hellwig.
