Xbox Live to Cut Off Original Xbox Support on April 15

Original Xbox will no longer have access to Live, nor will Xbox 1 games played on 360.

Xbox Live bundleAfter more than seven years, Xbox Live will cease to support the original Xbox beginning on April 15, 2010. Microsoft announced today their intentions to discontinue the service on their first game console, and by extension, any of its games that are playable on the Xbox 360 -- including Halo 2. The change comes as part of an effort to continue evolving the Xbox Live service for Xbox 360 gamers; the continued support of the original Xbox has hindered Microsoft's ability to do certain things with Live such as increasing the friends list cap of 100 people.

In a letter to Xbox Live members, Live general manager Marc Whitten explained why they're making the decision:

On April 15 we will discontinue the Xbox LIVE service for original Xbox consoles and games, including Xbox v1 games playable on Xbox 360 and Xbox Originals. I want to start by saying this isn't a decision we made lightly, but after careful consideration, it is clear this will provide the greatest benefit to the Xbox LIVE community.

Seven years ago we laid out our vision for the connected console when we launched Xbox LIVE. We believed then that the power of the Internet to connect people would revolutionize living room entertainment. It started with amazing multiplayer games, and we've since seen that bet pay off again and again with the launches of Xbox 360, Marketplace, Netflix and powerful social features like Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm. None of this would have been possible without the success of LIVE as a multiplayer gaming network.

Whitten acknowledged the "amazing run" that Halo 2 has had on Live, claiming the game's dedicated community has "fundamentally changed the way we play video games." But he made it clear that, to do more with Live, this was a necessary action. "[A]s we look down the road, we'll continue to evolve the service with features and experiences that harness the full power of Xbox 360," he explained. "To reach our aspiration, we need to make changes to the service that are incompatible with our original Xbox v1 games."

Current Xbox Live members who play only on the original Xbox will be eligible for a prorated refund, according to a Q&A; posted on the Xbox.com forums. But Whitten's letter suggests there might be more than a refund available; he encourages Live members to check their messages and email address in the coming weeks for "more details and opportunities," adding, "We view you as a partner in this process."

Any specifics on what new functionality we'll see from Live in the future is being kept under wraps for the time being. At the very least, removing support for the original Xbox will present Microsoft will the opportunity to allow Live members to finally have more than 100 friends on their friends lists. But that has been a problem since the launch of the Xbox 360, so Microsoft almost certainly has more up its sleeve than a higher (or perhaps nonexistent) friends list cap.

UPDATE: Microsoft has confirmed to 1UP that the discontinuation of Live on the original Xbox will have no effect on Games for Windows Live, including Halo 2 on PC.

Oh hey, check this out. $ony. See what I did there? Aren't I clever? I shouldn't do that to Sony though, because they aren't a huge evil corportation like Microsoft is. Its completely different. Sony is for the people!

i think its good to cut whats holding them back for a better online experience thorugh the 360 but its still a disapointment. I will miss those great times playing Halo 2 online, not matchmaking, but with long arduos battles with friends and friends of friends jumping in and out all night. i feel like a small part of a time from long ago will be lost. I will also miss Rainbow Six 3. That was one of my favorite online team games. But Microsoft knows what theyre doing and will make the new xbox live service better. Original Xbox Live, you will be missed.

It's great that they are going to be able to move Live beyond the restrictions of the original Xbox.  However, I think it's easy to forget that gaming is an expensive hobby, and there are still people who play an original Xbox.  While these people are unlikely to have Live access (subscription + broadband), it is easy to forget how many people are still playing on last generation tech due to the cost involved in gaming.

That said, you had a good run, Xbox.  Thanks for the memories.

It seems the right thing to do in my opinion. Times change, and so the videogame world turns. I seriously doubt that it is affecting a whole lot of people anyway. What do people expect, for MS to support Live for the original Xbox forever?

Oh and by the way GameMaster: MS isn't the best moral company, but who is? Please tell us who cares for us gamers so much and doesn't look at the bottom line above all else? That's right, no company does, cause they are a business. You just seem like the quintessential lonely gamer, that never goes outside and has no friends in the real world. You don't even have a current gen system and you complain about MS and social gaming being a bad thing. You aren't even buying anything, so why would they cater to you? Us who play games "socially" are the ones actually BUYING games, not you. If anything is bad for gaming, it's people like you who complain about the state of games, yet doesn't support the media in any way.

Sorry that people like to interact with others while playing games. I would seriously put money on that you don't have much interactions with other human beings, besides the flak you get for posting biased opinions on this forum. You should get out and try to make friends in the real world, then you might see that playing games online is really quite fun(besides all the little jerk-offs who love to talk about certain sexual acts when winning). I think you should just find some online games that suit your personal preference, and stop whining all the time. You can do it.

Is it just me, or do you post in every... single... thread? Seriously, I need some sort of an ignore feature. It's not even that I disagree with you. I'm just so tired of seeing your name pop up on every goddamn thread I go to on this site.

You are allowed to have an opinion, man, but you don't have to take absolutely every tiny little opportunity to shove said opinion into people's faces. Most of the time, I either agree with you or at least see where you are coming from, but because of your blatant, nigh pathetic need to whore yourself to these forums, I can't feel anything for you other than spite and disgust. We've never met. You're probably a very cool guy in real life, but the Greater Internet Dickwad Theory seems to apply quite nicely to you.

Seriously, man. Go back and look at how many times you have posted on this website, and then ask yourself what it all accomplished. Did you "change minds" or did you just turn people off of you. Your efforts to enlighten others to the dangers of buying the wrong video game entertainment system is an insane quest for an adult to undertake, considering all the REAL problems your zeal could be applied to resolving. However, if that is truly your passion, learn to choose your moments more carefully instead of splattering all of 1up with random quibbles. Most of the time, your posts have no real persuasive structure, and nearly all of them have some measure of spelling or grammatical error in place.

There are several very effective courses on persuasive writing I could recommend if you want. Basically, if I have to see you post on every thread, sometimes four or five times in a row, I would at least like to see your ideas expressed intelligently and concisely. You're not stupid, man. Use your head and think about what all this behavior says about you.

    I've said my peace.

The first Xbox has been pretty much dead for over four years now, so yeah, support of LIVE for the system was gonna end eventually anyway.  I'm surprised that Microsoft didn't end it sooner while promoting the 360 like they were.  What sold me on purchasing the first Xbox wasn't the Xbox LIVE service, but all of the great western RPGs it had, such as Star Wars: KOTOR, and Jade Empire from BioWare.  And so this is the final nail in the coffin for the old Xbox, you've served your purpose well.  R.I.P.

This is going to bring some amazing improvements to Xbox LIVE and maybe GFWL. Seems like a very necessary sacrifice and I'm pretty excited about the updates to come, the old LIVE was holding them back.. very tough choice to make though since the internet is full of uninformed, unintelligent opinions.. it'd be impossible to not get hate. They should put the facts out there everywhere and huge just to make sure people know... I was going to get some last gaming of Halo 2 in but I lost my massive map pack disk and the DLC for Xbox 1 is no longer available.

My Xbox 1 never broke like my two PS2s and 1 GCN.  Of course, my GCN was refurbished and not new like my PS2s, but come on!  It's like 360 is made to break so MS can sell 100 million of them instead of just 20.  I wish the Xbox 1 was still supported.  I never could use Live because I signed up for Live on 360 first and took someone's Xbox 1 GamerTag.  You can't pick a different name for the old console.  You have to pay to get a new name and I'm not changing it now.

The GBA did not get abondon to early if my memory stands out it was out over 6 years before it was abandoned and it lasted over 2 years with more powerful hard ware.

and the orginal Xbox has been out of production for 5 years, even nintnedo dosen't repair there old consoles anymore past that point. Has for them droping there xbox live service again all the games on that service are more then 5 years old. How many games has Sony droped from there PS3 service even if they were popular like calling all cars in the last year.

Stop complaining about betrayals to xbox users.  You've never owned an xbox and you in no way represent any xbox owner's feelings.

I owned an xbox and now I own a 360.  I loved them both and I feel in no way betrayed.  In fact I feel glad that MS has gotten so many PS3 exclusives to open up to multi-platform and given my 360 BC.

With Fallout 3 I was not disappointed at all with how it originally ended because that's how all the other Fallout games have ended is that they just ended. I think Broken steel was more of a response to Bethesda's fan-base that were expecting something like the end of Oblivion.  I never did finish Morrorwind so I'm not sure if that was a game you could play after you beat it.  But I'm just thinking Bethesda generated a rather large following after Oblivion and those people expected the same kind of ending.

Sure they still make PS2 games there are 100+ million units in circulation.  Why would they make games for a system that sold a little over 20 million?

And my Wii has broke, and I get to pay 80 bucks to fix it: ) (Had to pay 0 for the 360) .  I have 2 friends that had to send their PS3s backs.  This is going to be a continuing trend because the hardware is getting more complicated.  Its not like we have 52 pin connectors in our systems anymore.

thankful that Microsoft changed the game market to make it more social.  I've always played games with other people, Contra, the Ninja Turtle games, the Mario Karts, Tecmo bowl, NBA Jam, the AKI developed wrestling games (No Mercy), Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, Halo, and the list goes on and on.  I've had gaming parties at my house, and now I can play with more friends than before, even after they've grown up and moved away.

When a video game is completely finished it goes through a certification process, after it gets the okay it has to be printed, manufactured, and shipped.  This takes a couple months.  During that time a development team can create new material easily because they already have the assets.  Thats a HUGE reason why we see DLC at the launch of a game.  And the great thing about DLC is its OPTIONAL.  I think its great that if you had a great experience with a game, you can continue it with DLC.

So what if Microsoft stopped making games for the original xbox after 4 years.  Nowhere does it say you HAVE to go to 5, thats the standard!  There is no magic book for video game standards.  And your opinion of how long it should last is irrelevant.

Since the 360 has sold better than the original xbox, i guess the people that bought the original xbox didn't care.  I know I didn't.  I bought the 360 and if they released the 720 this fall I'd buy it too.  And don't feel bad or sorry for me, because I love my 360 and all the exclusives that I play and the Xbox Live experience.  I have a PS3 and all its good for is Blu-ray.

The Xbox 360 is a few months over four years old now.  The legacy support is pretty incredible when you think of it it terms of the competition:

-PS2 emulation on the PS3 cut after half a year.
-PS2 game servers.. umm, yeah, I don't remember when they all got axed anymore.  2007?  2008?  Save that of Final Fantasy XI, as I'm fairly certain you can still play that.  Regardless you couldn't play them for a long time now (but PS2 games weren't all that good for online play anyway).

I never played my old Xbox games on Live since I got my 360 anyway.  And I'll still be able to play my old games single player anyway, so it's not a huge loss.  I'm curious as to how they will enhance the service now that they aren't bound by old architecture.

Oh, and I'll ask you, as you asked me (for proof) to prove that Microsoft said that the original Xbox was upgradable.  Because I sure as hell can't see how the system was upgradable.  There are no expansion ports as was visible on Nintendo's old systems, no covers to open, etc.  Disc, controller, A/V, and power is all I can see.  An upgradable console may as well be a PC.

Cutting repair support for a product no longer being manufactured is standard.  You run out of parts, you run out of parts.  After working two years in tech support, this isn't a surprise.  At least the new system can play the old games.

As far as the Mechwarrior thing, Mechwarrior 5 is coming out for PC, and Xbox 360.  Or at least it was.  They're in legal troubles with Harmony Gold (Robotech) for copyright issues (similar mecha).

I check out 1up once in a while for news, reviews, etc and I post here literally about 2 or 3 times a year. Unfortunately, just about anytime I look at the posts on anything XBOX 360 related, there you are -  being annoying, possibly mentally handicapped and ridiculous (and not in a funny way).

Seriously man... you should really look into getting a life, a job, a girlfriend, something, ANYTHING; Start with one. Maybe you could get a job first (lots of fast-food chains hire people like you all the time) then, after a while, move on and try to make a REAL friend. You can do it. People overcome great odds and better their lives all the time.

If you really are mentally handicapped, I apologize if I offended you... but I think you actually might be serious (and not handicapped or joking). MICROSOFT AND SONY are BOTH major corporations (think: big, big, BIG store) and industry leaders. It's not like one is evil and one is good... They're both the same! They offer different gaming consoles with different features and different games. For anyone to think one is EVIL and make fun of anyone who enjoys their 360 is just as stupid and annoying as thinking that Sony is GOOD and allowing Sony's balls to roll so deeply down your throat 24/7.

That's the beauty of CHOICE. People get to choose what they like. Why is it so hard to like what you like and let others like what they like. Being this obnoxiously bias only embarrasses yourself.

P.S. - If you think that you could EVER be a critic of any kind here on Earth you're completely out of touch with reality.

Dropping the Xbox system support is no big deal, but all the games with it? That seems rather harsh, so much for Halo 2.

Everyone knows by now that you are the biggest Sony fanboy ever to inhibit the 1up boards. M$ is a corporation that strives for profit (just like any other corporation) and the original xbox had a very good run. A run that I hope is broken by the 360. M$ is not abandoning it's customers, it is just evolving. I don't know why I waste my breath with an ignorant fanboy, but I felt it should be said. If original xbox owners do not own the 360 by now, than I feel M$ gave them a proper notice so they can upgrade to the 360 by the 15th of April. I find it silly to show loyalty to any corporation since their priority is to take the consumers money. I own all three current gen systems and get equal enjoyment out of each, but if I was only able to afford one I buy it and be envious of anybody owning the others because I love video games in general, not any specific hardware developer. Gamemaster4747: you are an idiot and everytime I read your verbal vomit I want to strangle your ignorant ass with the hdmi cable from the back of my 360.

I can tolerate your opinion to an certain extent. But really, chillax. I still own an XBox 1 and a 360 now. I love them both. I have not fired up my xbox 1 in years and I don't feel burned by MS.

Please correct me if I am wrong, but by your logic Apple is by far the worse company ever with minscule upgraded hardware such as the Ipod and Ipod Touch (1st gen/2nd gen etc last about 2 years tops). Am I correct in imaging thats how you would feel?

It's honestly about time. The new functionality will more than make up for the loss of Halo 2 on Live. I think Halo 2 can be played over LAN, though, so it shouldn't be an issue. Besides, you'd think that after so long, most folks have made the transition over to the 360 anyway.

@gamemaster: You just don't stop crying about how bad MS is, do you? Why not complain about how Nintendo phased out the GBA when the DS came out? Or how Sony phased out the PS1 over the years and is basically phasing out the PS2? Why does old hardware need continued support from the manufacturer? Backwards compatibility is nice, but it's only important at the start of a new hardware cycle. MS is a big, bad corporation following the exact business model that's been around since Nintendo transitioned successful to the SNES.

@gentlegamer - I totally agree. My no longer being able to play Star Wars Battlefront 1&2 was the first thing that popped in my mind as I read the headline. If we could just get a frigg'n sequel though then it would be a solved issue.

@gamemaster - So I guess aside from being insanely anti-Xbox/MS you're probably all over PS3's nutz. I should start posting negative fanboy commentary on all Sony related articles so I can be cool like you.

This certainly sucks. I still play Star Wars Battlefront on XBL. I guess it serves me right for still playing good "old" games. I guess I'll have to fire up my PS2 and see if anyone still plays online there.

Sad about no more halo 2, I may be lame but that game held up through the years of newer "better" shooters. Will you still be able to download xbox originals through games on demand? And can I still play my xbox original discs in my 360?

    Dear Gamemaster,

We know dude. You hate Microsoft, it's fairly obvious to everyone. Thats your opinion and you are free to have it, far be it for me to criticise someones point of view. You're apparently curious about Microsoft, or I wouldn't see you posting comments in Micro related news. you should probably just try what you hate so rabidly, who knows you might like some of what they have to offer. But at the very least, you can have some experience based fuel for your arguments against your company of choice.

is halo 2.    even after the xbox 360 came out i still saw alot of people playing it.   i wouldn't be surprised if it still had a soild following.   unless this means they are going to start re releasing xbox orignals as xbox 360 games.  i'm pretty sure you can still play games like halo 1 2 and fable on the 360 you just won't be able to connct to xbox live while you play them.   its not like you can use xbox live when your connected playing a xbox game.   with probally less people playing theres probaly no reason to keep the orignal xbox live servers open.  since they are closing the servers in april though , i wouldn't be surprised if you see a small spike in ppl playing halo 2 before they cfose.   my best buy still sells halo 2 with the logo on top saying it works with the xbox 360, its the only orignal xbox game they carry.

I play both XBox and XBox 360 games online.  Both systems are connected to Live and although I find it harder to find players online on original XBox games, I'm still disappointed that Microsoft is pulling the plug.  This seems to be an ongoing trend in the industry, and although companies state that it's "in the best interest" of gamers, I still don't see much in terms of improvement to justify completely discontinuing the use of their servers.  I'm not one of those gamers that throw out the old and stick with the new.  It would've been nice to still have access to original XBox games' online play, but I guess all good things must come to an end.  Let's see what the future brings and we can decide whether this decision was justified.

  • I hope I am mistaken about games vs. LIVE

    Posted: Feb 05, 2010 12:00AM PST by  Danger2bme

In reading the announcement, it does say you can't play originals anymore.  Now, I HOPE I am wrong that I can play single player games with emulation software on the 360.  I can suck it up knowing I can't play an online game, but taking away the playability entirely would be a huge issue.  The thing that concerns me is that companies usually make sure to put the silver lining in everything they do that is negative and I would have thought they would have emphasized that you can play the games, just not on the live service.  It's shrouded a bit which is concerning.  I hope I'm wrong in my assessment...

I sent an email to XBOX for verification.  I'll see what I'm told.

If you read the way it is worded, it says that the Live function won't work on the 360.. not that the games won't work at all.   I would assume that they probably are not going to offer any more backwards compatability that isn't already offered.  But games that work on your 360 will still work on your 360.  The difference is that you just won't be able to play multiplayer with them, nor will you be able to use the communication features of Live while playing them.

Think of it like what EA does with several of their older games.   I'm actually surprised that Microsoft has supported the original xbox for as long as they did.

You can still play any Xbox 1 games supported on 360 just fine. It's just that they won't be able to get on Live anymore, whether you're playing that Xbox 1 game on a 360 or an original Xbox.

What I understood from the article is that you won't be able to play original Xbox games over Xbox Live, not that the 360 would stop being backwards compatible. But I could be wrong, this is Microsoft after all.

And not be holden to the constraints of a central system.   Want to play Baldur's Gate online?  Go for it.  Heroes 3?  Go right ahead.  While some games do take some toying with to get connected, the likes of gameranger and gamespy help do the legwork.

Not surprised in the least about this venture. They just don't want the responsibility of the old system and the warranties because they're tired of losing money on the elder console. But at least they're offering to compensate them for their system, it may even mean a free Arcade system for those who turn in the non-hacked original xbox. Almost makes me want to snag one cheap and just send it to microsoft to get a free extra system. But hey that's just me, until Microsoft finds yet another way to upgrade this is FearTheKirby saying OM to the NOM Bitches!

I know a lot of people are saying "out with the old in with the new" yada yada yada.  With all due respect though, at the end of the day a game is still a game, no matter how old it is.  I bought a 360 with the understanding I had backwards compatibility.  I still have some XBOX games I would like to play over again like Stubbs the Zombie.  Calling people lame because they enjoy older games is ignorant.  People shelling out $60 for a new game vs. finding a classic for $5 or $10 they never played could have their own logic questioned.

My 360 should be able to play old games like promised.  Period.  PS3 took flack for taking that away and XBOX deserves the same level of flack for it.  I'm okay with LIVE not working anymore for older games.  I'm not okay that you can't play older games at ALL on it.  I'm sorry but that's shady.

"Original Xbox will no longer have access to Live, nor will Xbox 1 games played on 360"

Ok, they are just talking about people who play Xbox 1 games Online using the 360, correct? They aren't saying that all Xbox games will cease to work on Xbox 360, right? In other words, single player Xbox games that are properly Backwards Compatible will still work fine???

I still have a few original Xbox games I still need to get to, like Crimson Skies, Psychonauts, KOTOR, etc. Not including the Original Xbox Games I downloaded from Xbox Live, like Halo and Black.

I hope this means they'll be making changes to the Friends List and messaging setup.  They've said the reason they stuck to the same format all these years is because 360 shares the same infrastructure as the original Xbox, so let's hope for bigger lists, grouping, and improved text/video messaging.  Will be interesting to see what they come up with now that they're not held back by the old platform.
