Back to Basics - Dedicated Hosting Explained

Important to know:

  • Dedicated servers are most suitable for businesses having or expecting a high stable flow of traffic, need server space, wish to customize server settings and have in-house tech experts.
  • You have more freedom and flexibility than on most other plan types.
  • Fully managed plans are preferable if you don't have server tech experts.
  • With lower demands, a Virtual Private Server might be more suitable.
  • If you have fluctuating traffic, have a look at Cloud Hosting or possibly Hybrid plans. The top providers below also have great hybrids combining cloud and dedicated hosting plans, but for this list we only compared their dedicated server hosting plans.

We've made a short video to explain what dedicated web hosting is. Check it out if you need to learn or refresh your memory.

What is a Dedicated Server?

Server rack

In the web hosting business, the dedicated servers, also referred to as dedicated hosting, are the Rolls Royce. A dedicated server is a powerful computer that is used solely as a network server; a single computer in a network reserved for network needs. It refers to the rental and exclusive use of a computer and it provides services for only one account or domain name. It is therefore solely for use by one organization, and is leased and stored in the data centre of the host company. Read Wikipedia's article about dedicated hosting for more information.

A dedicated server includes an operating system (mostly some variants of Linux or Windows) a web server, related software (such as a SQL server, Control Panel and much more) and connection to the Internet, all housed in the web hosting company's data centers. Dedicated server hosting is typically required for a web site or a group of related company sites that develop a substantial amount of traffic. The server can usually be configured and operated remotely from the host company while still allowing for client customization. A dedicated server can be assigned to function only as a resource server and cannot be used as a client. It is important to note that the server is owned by the web host and you do not have physical access to it.

Dedicated web hosting is beneficial while developing a complex business or a high-end e-commerce site as you will need more space and security - a web server dedicated to your business. It is purchased by a company when they want more control of their server. They purchase or rent the hardware from the hosting company who then normally support and manage it. Internet connectivity is provided to the server, in many cases over 10 or 100 Mb/s Ethernet. Dedicated servers are most often housed in datacenters, similar to co-location facilities, providing redundant power sources and HVAC systems. The financial benefit with cheap dedicated server hosting is huge: large initial investments are not needed.

Dedicated hosting in two flavors: managed and unmanaged hosting

Commonly, unmanaged hosting plans include hardware, operating system, web server and Internet connection but you manage it yourself, requiring a lot technical skills. Managed dedicated hosting plans however include the basics and pretty much everything else, such as support and assistance. The only thing you need to worry about is your web site and content.

Trusting Cheap Dedicated Hosting Plans

If you are looking for a cheap dedicated server, you should be careful when comparing packages. Things to consider are operating system, data backup and monitoring service, hardware options, space, bandwidth and technical support. Ask the hosting providers to give you a few websites for references, read hosting reviews and be sure that the price is affordable before you sign up. We know that the dedicated servers on this site are the one that will give you the most reliability and flexibility for your money.

Do your research because getting that financially friendly, cheap dedicated web hosting plan will be easy. The list above will be able to guide you, otherwise you can conduct an advanced search to specify your hosting requirements. You can get some extra information, including the most helpful user reviews and plan features, for each provider by clicking the blue arrows in the list. By using the checkboxes on the left you can compare plans, and to the right you have links to either get hosting or read more on our review pages, which include user and expert reviews, plan features and various statistics for the dedicated hosting plans from the provider.

Don't overdo it

There is a common belief that you need a dedicated server if you want the flexibility to run different scripts and install custom software. That used to be the truth. Nowadays, virtualization softwares are so good that you can get almost the same flexibility at a fraction of the cost if you decide to make a Virtual Private Server to be the home for your website(s).

Managed Dedicated Hosting

If you want web hosting for your business which is easy to handle, then managed web hosting might be what you're looking for. More about managed dedicated web hosting

As we mentioned above there are two forms of dedicated hosting; managed and unmanaged. These two are in many ways similar to each and other but they do differ in some ways. As opposed to unmanaged hosting, managed hosting is exactly what it says, managed. The hosting provider makes sure that everything works as it should, also when it comes to the software.

As you probably understand managed hosting will be a smooth ride for you as you won't have to be a hosting expert when working with your site. The hosting provider is responsible for everything from software to equipment. The only thing you will have to be in charge of is the customer-specific application.

With this user-friendly type of hosting comes one downside. You'll lose some flexibility as you will have to adjust to the software provided by the hosting company. If you don't mind this, managed hosting is a great alternative for you and your business.

Full vs. Partial Management

Most providers that offer managed solutions offer them in a full or partial configuration. The difference between full and partial managed hosting varies between providers. Typically, fully managed means that the client has access to customer service, technical support, server administration and performance maintenance around the clock, year-round. Partially managed, on the other hand, usually only provides routine server resets and service and support during standard business hours. Since from a business perspective partially managed is essentially unmanaged, the remainder of the information provided here refers specially to fully managed web hosting.

Managed Web Hosting Pros & Cons

The greatest advantage of managed web hosting is that the developer gets to focus on the website and business logic and doesn’t have to worry about server maintenance. This is particularly helpful for individuals and small teams that do not have the resources to update, optimize and maintain the server. If the developers require new server technology, they have the provider handle it rather than spend time learning skills that are not directly important to the service that they provide to their clients.

Many web developers are however skilled in server technology. These professional can take advantage of granular control of the server, which is a level of control that is not provided in a managed scenario. A managed scenario often requires sacrificing some freedoms; for instance, in some cases the tech guys managing your server might be slow to respond, or the optimal server configuration may be difficult to achieve, so the developers have to make concessions. Lastly, a managed solution usually costs more than an unmanaged dedicated solution involving the same hardware and software.

A Typical Managed Web Hosting Solution

Managed web hosting solutions are available for both Linux and Windows Server. A typical solution will allow the client to choose between a number of hardware solutions depending on requirements, then install desired software and scripts, and then install, configure and ensure compatibility by hand. With the best dedicated hosting providers in our list, you'll find that tech support can help every step of the way, and in will even come with suggestions for improvements.

Managed solutions usually have around-the-clock customer service and on-site technical support available. They also provide sophisticated tools that allow you to manage and analyze bandwidth, storage, security, apps and other aspects of the hosting solution. Most of the ones in our list has uptime guarantee, and you can rest assured that they have great monitoring and security options.

Is Managed Right for Me?

A managed web hosting solution is right for you if you require enterprise-level web administration but do not possess the skills or resources to provide it yourself. For businesses, a dedicated solution is often a better option. If you are an independent developer, then you might consider a partially managed or unmanaged solution as an alternative.

Whether you go for a regular dedicated server or choose to have a managed server rest assured that the companies listed on this page will provide you with the best dedicated hosting solutions available, combined with excellent tech support and customer service.
