KRISTIANSAND (Norway)




kristiansandThe city was established in 1641 by the Danish-Norwegian king Christian IV. At present it has about 75 000 inhabitants and is the southernmost city of Norway, located by the Straits of Skagerrak. Kristiansand is Norway's fifth biggest city and one of the biggest ports in the country. It has the greatest number of sunny days throughout the year.

It is not only Norwegian heritage but also British and continental influence that is reflected in the architecture and culture of the city. Kristiansand is considered to be one of the best-preserved Renaissance cities in Europe. The Oddernes Church dating from 12th century is one of the oldest buildings in Kristiansand. The world's oldest skiing club was also founded in the city.

As far as economy is concerned, in Kristiansand there is one of the country's largest industrial parks - Sorlandsparken. Companies representing different branches of industry and science are located on its premises. Among them there are companies operating in the field of advanced technologies such as IT and offshore.

The agreement on twinning cooperation was signed on 21st September 1991. Both sides declared willingness to cooperate in the fields of environmental protection, health care, culture, sport and tourism and to support cooperation between chambers of commerce operating in the cities. This agreement also expresses the interest both sides take in the promotion of investment as well as in the exchange of information about the life in both cities.

The effects of the cooperation:
  • participation of Gdynia and Kristiansand representatives in the Polish-Norwegian conference in Warsaw, entitled: "EEA and Norwegian Financial mechanisms: A New Area of Co-operation between Norway and Poland" combined with presentations on co-operation of both cities - October 2004
  • gifts for the Municipal Hospital in form of medical equipment
  • Taxi Owners Association in Kristiansand presented a minibus to the Day Adaptation Center for Children and Youth in Gdynia
  • Training for the employees of MOPS (Municipal Social Care Centre) from Gdynia referring to the activities of social welfare
  • Visit of two representatives of the International Centre for Cooperation with Eastern Europe and Developing Countries. The guests had meetings with among others members of the City Board, officers of the Gdynia City Council, Port of Gdynia, Chamber of Industry and Commerce of Gdynia, Secretary of the Union of the Baltic Cities.
  • Initiating cooperation with Grim Skole in Kristiansand by Elementary School no.5 in Gdynia-1994
  • Participation of an ecologist from Gdynia in the conference in Kristiansand and lectures on Local Agenda 21 in Poland- May 1998
  • Visit of specialists on sport from Kristiansand to Gdynia during the Twin Cities Sporting Games in Gdynia- June 1999
  • Study visit of the Mayor's Plenipotentiary on Safety, the Chairman of the Gdynia City Council Commission on Safety and the Chief of Police in Gdynia to Kristiansand. Crime prevention, "Safe City" programme and drug prevention were the subjects of the visit- November 1999.
  • participation of Gdynia representatives in "Easy Access" conference on the disabled - September 2003
  • visit of the Kristiansand City Hall representatives aimed at discussing proposals for Gdynia-Kristiansand co-operation projects - February 2004
  • visit to Gdynia of the representatives of Kristiansand local authorities concerning further co-operation between Gdynia and Kristiansand as well as Norway's financial assistance to new EU member countries - May 2004
  • participation of Gdynia and Kristiansand representatives in the Polish-Norwegian conference in Warsaw, entitled: "EEA and Norwegian Financial mechanisms: A New Area of Co-operation between Norway and Poland" combined with presentations on co-operation of both cities - October 2004
  • Visit of Gdynia City Hall and Gdynia City Council representatives to Kristiansand concerning a discussion about joint projects - May 2005
  • Participation of Kristiansand City Hall representatives in Gdynia conference entitled "The role of self-government in job activation of people with disabilities" - May 2005
  • participation of the official Kristiansand delegation in the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of granting Gdynia city rights - February 2006
  • visit of a group of carers from the "Ringasen Bolig" - a centre for autistic persons and the mentally ill from Kristiansand. The aim of the visit was to get acquainted with the work and functioning rules of Gdynia institutions dealing with social care - April 2006
  • participation of young sportsmen from Kristiansand in the 14th Twin Cities Sporting Competition in Gdynia - May 2006
  • visit of the representatives of Sports Department of Kristiansand Municipality within the cooperation with Gdynia Sport Centre - May 2006
  • working visit of Kristiansand City Hall representatives to Gdynia concerning the cooperation within the UBC Commission on Health and Social Affairs - June 2008
  • visit of Kristiansand representatives on the occasion of "The Tall Ships' Races 2009" - July 2009
  • visit of Gdynia City Hall representatives to Kristiansand connected with the participation in the 10th General Conference of the Union of the Baltic Cities - September 2009
  • participation of Gdynia representatives in the twin cities' meeting during"The Tall Ships' Races 2010" - August 2010
  • visit to Gdynia of the Mayor of Kristiansand - April 2014
  • participation of Gdynia delegation to the Tall Ships Races 2015 in Kristiansand - July 2015
