I swear by high-street fashion - Kalki Koechlin

They key to Kalki Koechlin’s style is, ‘Don’t over-think it’. Whether she’s wearing a gown, a saree or a dress, the actress is always understated. She doesn’t fuss over her hair or make-up (in fact, she hardly wears any) and dresses with comfort in mind. The girl likes a bargain and can often be spotted at inexpensive outlets on the streets. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t ooze glamour at every turn. Kalki’s style signatures include pretty dresses, smart ganjis, easy evening wear and polished brogues. In fact, it’s her effortless approach to dressing and her laidback, thrown-together looks that make her style so easy to put together. PS: In an un-divaesque manner, she isn’t afraid to wear something twice. If you want a wardrobe of elegant classics and wearable trends, let Kalki be your fashion icon.

Q. Who is your style icon?
A
I have two. Gwen Stefani and Audrey Hepburn. Gwen because she constantly experiments with her clothes and always manages to look unique. And Audrey because no one symbolises classic style quite like her.
Q. What is your style statement?
A
My style changes from day to day. It actually depends on my mood.
Q. Two most stylish actresses in our industry are…
A
Rekha and Zeenat Aman.
Q. Name your favourite designers.
A
Among Indian designers, I like Sabyasachi. His clothes are breathtakingly beautiful. The work is so intricate. He can make anyone look stunning. My other favourite designer is Marc Jacobs. I wish we had more access to his stuff here. His creations are fun and flirty.
Q. Your biggest fashion faux-pas moment…
A
I can’t remember any one in particular right now. But if repeating clothes is a fashion faux-pas, then I make them quite often because if I like something, I will wear it more than once. Fashion critics be damned.
Q. High-street wear or designer wear?
A
I swear by high-street fashion. It's more wearable every day. I opt for designer wear only when I have to go for a function or an evening event, as designer clothes are grand. Also, I like buying clothes from vintage shops. There’s a street in London called Neal Street, where you get everything vintage. All shops there have clothes that resemble the ’60s and ’70s fashion. I can live there.
Q. Are you a shopaholic?
A
Depends. I can spend hours at street shops. I love checking out the local fashion of every place I visit.
Q. Bags, shoes or clothes – what do you like to splurge on the most?
A
I have a major shoe fetish. It’s becoming a huge problem for me because I don’t have place on my shoe rack. I’ve now taken over some space on Anurag’s (Kashyap, her husband) shoe shelf. I have over 60 shoes.
Q. Your no. 1 fashion tip…
A
Don’t follow trends blindly. Wear your personality. And always, always wear clothes that suit your body type.
Q. What’s the most flattering piece of clothing you own?
A
A cream and gold floor-length anarkali by Preeti S Kapoor. It’s something that I feel will look fabulous on Rekha.
Q. According to you, which is the most fashionable movie of all-time?
A
Oh, there are quite a few. But I think Some Like It Hot, the French film Le Samurai, The Thomas Crown Affair and A Single Man are the most stylish films ever made.
