Corporate Social Responsibility

Something to shout about:

The Library’s commitment to CSR can be seen in many of our day-to-day activities such as waste recycling, our work with charity READ International and the use of ethical procurement practices.

These, alongside other activities and plans, form our ongoing CSR programme which aims to improve the quality of life for staff, to impact positively on the environment, community and wider society and also to engage in ethical business models.

Speaking of this year, Chair of the CSR Working Group, Mary Canavan, comments: “Despite the many challenges facing the Library this year, I am encouraged by the effort and commitment demonstrated by colleagues highlighted in this year’s CSR eReport. I am also grateful for all the efforts by staff to maintain our recycling targets, lessen our energy use, and have a record breaking year for volunteers. I look forward to the year to come”

After another successful year for the Library’s Corporate Social Responsibility programme (CSR), the CSR Working Group has maintained momentum and delivered key projects which aim to improve quality of life for staff, impact positively on the environment, community and wider society and also demonstrate our ethical behaviour as an organisation.

We are delighted to launch our CSR eReport for 2010/11 which outlines the key achievements for the year and some of the fantastic work undertaken by numerous colleagues across the Library, alongside their day-to-day jobs.

It has been equally important in the difficult economic climate to focus our efforts on sustainable projects, which would continuously yield benefit not only for our staff, but also for the neighbourhoods and communities we serve.

Some highlights of the report include:

  • Increased opportunities for Small to Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs) to support CSR and achieve greater value for money with increased innovation and service
  • An increase of Staff Reader Volunteers by 400%
  • Donation of over 3500 unwanted personal books to READ International, facilitating in thousands of text books being sent to school children in East Africa
  • Meeting the recycling target of 70% for a second year
  • Participating in the WWF (World Wildlife Fund) Earth Hour as part of the UKs first Climate Week
  • Receiving the London Green 500 Platinum Award for 2011
