Managing Survivors of Torture

every now and again i get a text from someone providing care to a survivor of torture asking “what next?” thanks for recognizing the needs of your patients.

steps to providing emergency care to said patient population:

1. provide medical care, PRN
2. dispo them as appropriate (make sure they’re safe to go home if d/c is the plan)
3. if you’re at the hurst, dinali has libertas pamphlets in her box; give one to the person you’re caring for
4. (regardless of discharge/admission status) if the patient is comfortable, you can email braden, dinali, myself, anjali or micah the BRIEF story (nation, type of torture), pt’s name, contact info and we’ll get it to leah, our coordinator. or you can email it to leah directly:

if you have a survivor (current/past) of human trafficking:

1. repeat steps 1,2 from above
2. visit: if you need help w/basics
3. (you cannot give the pt’s information w/o his/her permission) call safe horizon (one of our biggest local anti-trafficking advocacy orgs): 866.689.HELP or the national tip/hotline: 1-888-3737-888 for a talk thru the next steps (or have the SW do this)
4. remember if the person is a child, IE: not an emancipated minor or less than 18yrs of age, you CAN call the above numbers but you MUST call ACS 1-800-635-1522.

certainly i (and braden/dinali/anjali/micah) are happy to reply to texts/calls but you’re gambling that we’re awake or not underground at sinai or on a plane, etc…
