McDonald's widens pizza test; pizza operators gird for assault
EVANSVILLE, Ind. -- McDonald's Corp., operator of the world's largest fast-food chain, is expanding its test of pizza here, and pizza operations nationwide are bracing for the worst.
"We're ready to give them a fight with everything we've got," vowed Steve Reinemund, president of the world's third-largest chain, Pizza Hut.
McDonald's, which began offering a 14-inch, round, traditional-style pizza in a single franchised unit here earlier last month, will expand its test to about 15 restaurants in Evansville and nearby Owensboro, Ky., within about six weeks, according to local unit managers.
Its latest pizza product is offered in four varieties -- cheese, pepperoni, sausage, and deluxe, which sports cheese, sausage, pepperoni, green pepper, onion, button mushrooms, and tomato slices, said Melissa Oakley, McDonald's representative. …
