ICD-10 Classification
The International Statistical Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD) is a comprehensive classification of causes of morbidity and mortality. All inpatient episodes and attendances that contain diagnoses must be recorded to the mandated version of ICD. The ICD-10 refers to the tenth revision.
The World Health Organisation(WHO) publishes and distributes the ICD-10 classification. WHO is the copyright holder of ICD-10, which is used under licence for United Kingdom government purposes.
ICD-10 is a statistical tool requiring the application of rules, conventions and standards to enable accurate, consistent and comprehensive capture of data for secondary uses.
We provide the national products and services to support the use of the ICD-10 classification for UK Government purposes.
ICD-10 is not used for point of care recording by a clinician. This is done using the standard clinical terminology SNOMED CT.
Cross-maps provide the link between SNOMED CT and the current NHS mandated version of ICD-10.
