XXI GRAND PRIX DE L'AUTOMOBILE CLUB DE FRANCE
Montlhéry - Paris (F), 23 June 1935 40 laps x 12.504 km (7.77 mi) = 500.16 km (310.79 mi) (Note 1)
German domination
|
The French organizers were trying to hinder a German walkover by adding three chicanes to the track. The chicanes
lowered the speed considerably and also put great strain to the brakes.
|
Entries:
Two of the Auto Union cars had the new 5.6 litre engine.
Zehender's car was found overweight (783 kg) but finally approved.
The new SEFAC was also overweight. Lehoux did some slow practice laps finding the car totally uncompetitive.
The Bugatti entry was full of controvercy, the team using an ordinary T59 during practice. The car used in the race
appeared at midnight and was moved with the organizers' collusion without scrutineering into the Bugatti pit.

Nuvolari took the lead of the race followed by Stuck Chiron and the Mercedes drivers.
There was an embarrasing moment for French motorsport on lap 4 when the bonnet on the Bugatti fell off revealing the
huge 4.9 litre T50 engine It has been estimated that the Bugatti with such an engine must have weighted well over 800 kg.
Chiron was in great form and passed Stuck on lap 4 making it into a double lead for Alfa Romeo. But soon the Monegasque
had to retire with transmisson troubles. The race now turned into a duel for the lead between Caracciola and Nuvolari,
the Mercedes driver clearly back in his old pre-crash form. The other Mercedes cars of Fagioli and von Brauchitsch followed
a bit back. The Auto Union cars were out of luck, both Rosemeyer and Stuck had to retire and Varzi's car had a water leak
and ignition problems.
Order after 12 laps:
| 1. Nuvolari (Alfa Romeo) | 1h07m00.3s |
| 2. Caracciola (Mercedes-Benz) | 1h07m08.7s |
| 3. Fagioli (Mercedes-Benz) | 1h07m55.1s |
| 4. Brauchitsch (Mercedes-Benz) | 1h08m23.7s |
| 5. Zehender (Maserati) | 1h12m25.4s |
| 6. Varzi (Auto Union) | 1h17m41.2s |
| 7. Sommer (Maserati) | 1h32m42.2s |
After several pitstops for new plugs Varzi gave up the race and handled over his car to
Rosemeyer.
The fight for the lead continued, Nuvolari being the only driver able to take full advantage of the chicanes.
Caracciola took over the lead and lowered the lap record to 5:30.6. Then Nuvolari passed the Mercedes, coming out from
one of the chicanes, and put in the fastest lap of the day, 5:29.1.
When Nuvolari had to retire at 1/3 distance with the same troubles as Chiron, no one seemed to be able to hinder the Mercedes
cars, which now were running in the top three positions.
But Caracciola got trouble and slowed down and soon the Mercedes cars were driving in formation.
The orders came out to keep the places, but it did not hinder Fagioli from immediately attacking Caracciola and
taking the lead. The German answered and re-passed the Italian and to the disgust of team leader Neubauer the drivers
then started a duel that went on until Fagioli's car developed serious ignition problems and fell back.
Now it was the Mercedes duo of Caracciola and von Brauchitsch which was cruising the track in formation. Von
Brauchitsch followed team orders and never tried to pass his limping team leader and they took the flag half a
second apart. Zehender took the 6C-34 home as third, beating Fagioli's Mercedes. Rosemeyer, who had been in and out of the
pits, finished fifth as the only Auto Union driver.

The Auto Union team was a non starter at Barcelona. The new 5.6 litre engines had shown carburettor problems and the team
tried to sort that out before the German GP.
Mercedes-Benz sent only two cars to Barcelona so von Brauchitsch was a non starter.
The Ferrari team was dividing their entries between Penya Rhin and the Lorraine GP, Brivio doing his first race since his

content himself with a second place. Only Nuvolari's Alfa remained on the same lap as the Mercedes cars. The works Maseratis

Mercedes-Benz's seventh victory of the season

The Auto Union team was still working on their engines and was again a non starter. Having given the V-8RI its debut race in the Marne GP it was expected that the Scuderia Subalpina
should enter the car at Spa. However the only Maserati to find its way to the start was Lehoux's 8CM.

Lehoux, who had been slowest in practice found himself on the front row of the grid. With all eyes upon him Lehoux panicked,
made a false start, realized his mistake, braked and stalled just as the flag was dropped. There were some scary moments
as the field raced down the hill towards Eau Rouge passing the brightly yellow Maserati on both sides.
Caracciola took the lead followed by Wimille, Dreyfus and von Brauchitsch. The latter passed the Alfa
and started to attack Wimille's Bugatti.
Soon Wimille retired giving Mercedes a 1-2-3 lead. Coming up to the pitstops von Brauchitsch suddenly came slowly into the pits
for a plug change. He was back in the pits a lap later for good and von Brauchitsch went back behind the pits for a rest,
while the mechanics pushed away the car.
After the pit stops Fagioli started to close the gap to Caracciola. Soon the Mercedes drivers were fighting each other
all over the track with a fist shaking Fagioli trying to pass Caracciola, who refused to give his team mate any room.
A furious Neubauer decided to call in Fagioli again. Just as in the Eifelrennen 1934 Fagioli's stop was followed by some multilingual
shouting between the driver and the team manager and just as in the Eifelrennen Fagioli just stepped out of his car and
retired. Neubauer had to call for an astonished von Brauchitsch to come and take over.
Von Brauchitsch came out of the pits in forth place and started to hunt down the Scuderia Ferrari cars of Chiron and Dreyfus.
Dreyfus was passed and soon afterwards the Ferrari driver entered the pits. Having followed von Brauchitsch closely he
claimed he had inhaled the exhausts from Mercedes special fuel and got sick. Marinoni had to take over.
It took von Brauchitsch only two more laps to catch Chiron and pass him, the cars almost touching wheels at Eau Rouge.
The German continued at full speed setting the fastest laps. There was no one however who could do anything against
Caracciola, who went on to take his fourth and Mercedes-Benz's seventh victory of the season.
Von Brauchitsch made it a Mercedes 1-2 while a totally exhausted Chiron collapsed in the Ferrari pit after the race.

The sensation of the race was newcomer Prince Birabongse from Siam who under the pseudonym "B Bira" was racing the new ERA
he had got on his 21st birthday. ERA's dominated in the early part of the race, Mays taking the lead
in front of Seaman (ERA), Howe (Delage), Veyron (Bugatti), Rovere (Maserati) and Fairfield (ERA). On lap 3 Bira passed
Howe to give ERA a 1-2-3 lead, but soon all ERA's except for Fairfield's were in trouble. Mays and Seaman had to retire
and Bira had to stop for new plugs. Other retirements included Mrs. Stewart (Derby), Breillet (Salmson) and
Thorpe (Frazer-Nash) and Rovere had to make a lenghty stop. Fairfield now had a confortable lead over Veyron, Berrone
and "Bira". Howe was also out with brake problems and Bira, who had passed Berrone with ease, was able to go close
in on Veyron by 8 seconds per lap and retake the 2nd position two laps from the end.

The Alfa Romeos took the early lead but Wimille was able to follow and led for a few laps during the pitstops before the Ferrari drivers repassed him. Chiron was off form with flu and he
also had to make an extra stop because of brake troubles so it was Dreyfus who came out on top in another double victory for Ferrari with Chiron second and Wimille third. The Maserati
6C-34's of Farina (entered by Gino Rovere) and Lehoux could do nothing against the opposition. Farina tried his best to follow the Alfas but had to make an extra pitstop finishing fifth.
