Oklahoma scene: Edmonton Oilers, Dallas Stars to play exhibition at Cox Center
The Edmonton Oilers, the parent team of the Oklahoma City Barons, will play the Dallas Stars in an NHL exhibition game Sept. 27 at the Cox Center. It will be the fourth NHL preseason game to be played in Oklahoma City, the most recent in 2002, when the Los Angeles Kings played the Phoenix Coyotes in the then-Ford Center.
Ticket packages for next season, including the exhibition game, are on sale immediately by calling the Barons office at 232-GOAL. Barons season seat holders will have a ticket to the NHL game included their season seat packages.
MADDEN ACADEMIC ALL-AMERICAN OF THE YEAR
Amy Madden of Southern Nazarene University was named 2013 Capital One Academic All-America of the Year for NCAA Division II softball. The senior from Bethany was chosen by the College Sports Information Directors of America; the award is recognized as the most prestigious academic award in college athletics.
The biology/chemistry major had a 4.00 grade-point average. Madden was a leader on the field, too, posting a .371 batting average, 14 home runs and 48 RBIs. She has already been accepted to the University of Oklahoma Medical School and will begin classes in the fall.
FORMER 89ERS COACH COT DEAL DIES
Former Oklahoma City 89ers coach Ellis “Cot” Deal died Tuesday at age 90. The Arapaho native spent many years as an 89ers coach or manager after a 16-year playing career. The former pitcher spent most of his playing days with the Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals organizations. He played parts of four seasons with the Sox or Cardinals. Services are scheduled 10 a.m. Friday at Rose Hill Burial Park.
OCU TIED FOR FIRST PLACE
Jessica Schiele of Oklahoma City University helped the Stars to first-place tie with Cal State-San Marcos at the NAIA Women's Golf Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
The teams were 39-over par after two rounds at Wilderness Ridge Golf Club; they had a three-shot lead over second place Lubbock Christian and five-stroke advantage over defending national champion British Columbia.
Schiele tied the national championship record for lowest score by shooting (34-34) a 68. She jumped to the top of the individual leader board and is 1-under-par for the tournament after shooting rounds of 75 and 68. Christian Liggin of Coastal Georgia shot 1-under-par (71) for the second round and is 3-over-par for the tournament.
OU WOMEN IN EIGHTH
For the second straight day, the University of Oklahoma women's golf team shot a 3-over-par 291 at the NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., on Wednesday.
The Sooners remain in eighth place through two rounds at the par-72 University of Georgia Golf Course and have two rounds remaining. Fourth-ranked Oklahoma trails leader USC by 22 shots, but is just four strokes outside the top five. USC shot tournament-best 12-under Wednesday and is in front of second-place Alabama by 12 shots.
Alabama's Stephanie Meadows is at 8-under par through two rounds and holds a one-shot lead among a field of 126 competitors.
OU junior Chirapat Jao-Javanil, the defending individual national champion, is tied for 23rd place with a 1-over 145 for two rounds.
Oklahoma State is 22nd in the team standings. Cowgirl freshman Julie Yang finished the day tied for 28th place at 2-over 146 after carding an even-par 72.
