Henry S. Sanford counts probably more years of diplomatic service than any man in this country, having commenced as attache at St. Petersburg in 1847 and gone through every grade in our service. He was born in Connecticut, the son of Nehemiah C. Sanford, one of the chief founders of the large manufacturing town of Birmingham, and for many years a Senator of that State.
