On to November: Candidates in Bergenfield, Dumont and New Milford win party nods in primaries

Uncontested municipal primary elections in Bergenfield, Dumont and New Milford yielded no surprises last week, as all candidates in the running secured their respective parties' nominations.

The Bergen County Clerk's Office reported no nominating petitions filed by Independent candidates from those three communities.

The primaries were held on June 3; the general elections will be Tuesday, Nov. 4.

BERGENFIELD

For the Democrats, Borough Council president Christopher Tully and Rafael Marte received 322 votes and 312 votes, respectively.

Republican Councilwoman Kathleen Sahlberg and her running mate, Reynaldo Magdadaro, tallied 188 votes and 179 votes, respectively.

Tully is seeking his third three-year term; Marte was appointed by the council to fill a vacant seat in May 2013, but lost an election to retain it in November. Sahlberg defeated Marte in that election to finish a one-year, unexpired term. Magdadaro, a resident of Byrne Place, is a newcomer to the borough's political scene.

DUMONT

Democrats Peter Musse and Kenneth Melamed received 190 votes and 188 votes, respectively.

On the Republican side, Councilman Matthew Hayes and Donald Morrell tallied 194 votes and 183 votes, respectively. Councilman William Brophy, who is finishing his first term, is not seeking re-election.

Musse and Melamed, members of the Recreation Commission and Board of Health, respectively, are newcomers to the borough's political scene. Hayes is seeking his second term; Morrell, also a member of the Recreation Commission, was unsuccessful in a council bid last year.

Voters in November also will fill a one-year, unexpired term, created by virtue of the resignation of former Councilman Matthew Carrick in April. Councilman Carl Manna was selected last month to assume that vacancy. The deadline for prospective candidates to file nominating petitions to run for the unexpired term is Sept. 10.

NEW MILFORD

Democratic council president Randi Duffie received 256 votes to secure her party's nomination to run for mayor.

Republican Mayor Ann Subrizi tallied 176 votes to put her name on the ballot in November.

As far as those seeking council seats, incumbent Democrat Hedy Grant and her running mate, Ulises Cabrera, received 254 votes and 245 votes, respectively.

Republicans Al Alonso and William LoGuidice each tallied 181 votes.

Duffie, who is finishing her second council term, is seeking a four-year mayoral term. Grant is seeking her second council term; Cabrera, a member of the Beautification Committee, is a newcomer to the borough's political scene. Subrizi, a former councilwoman, is seeking her second mayoral term. Alonso, a resident of Clover Court, and LoGuidice, a resident of Milford Avenue, are newcomers to the borough's political scene.
