MARTINO Alonso, the sire of Godolphin's top miler Ramonti, has been put down after breaking a leg in a paddock accident at Azienda Agricola Antezzate in Italy. The son of Marju was 18.
Bred in Ireland by Godolphin Management Co. Ltd out of the Cure The Blues mare Cheerful Note, Martino Alonso won six races - two at Listed level - for Alduino Botti in Italy. He also ran second to Taipan in the 1998 Group 1 Premio Roma.
Retired to stand at Siba Stud near Brescia in 2001, Martino Alonso rewarded the faith of his owners by siring Italian champion Ramonti out of a first crop of just 19 foals. Alduino Botti trained the colt to win the 2006 Group 1 Premio Vittorio di Capua, after which he was snapped by Godolphin and campaigned to win four races at the top level in 2007 including the Queen Anne and Sussex Stakes.
Following a season atKildangan Stud, Ramonti was switched to stand at Allevamento di Besnate in Italy.
Other small crops by Martino Alonso yielded Group 2 winner Dagda Mor, Listed scorer Marshade and the Group 2-placed Rumsfeld.
In November 2009, the stallion hit the headlines when kidnapped from Siba Stud. He was found the following May by police 400 miles away on government land near Pomigliano D'Arco in Campania.
