Dr. George Bugliarello, Marconi Society Founding Member, Dies
Longtime Marconi Board member George Bugliarello, President Emeritus and professor at Polytechnic Institute of New York University, died Friday, February 18, 2011 in New York.
Dr. Bugliarello, an engineer and educator with a broad background ranging from fluid mechanics to computer languages, biomedical engineering, science policy and urban sustainability, was the force behind the creation of Metrotech Center, the nation’s largest urban university-industry park. In 1994 he was awarded the New York City Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Science and Technology for that achievement.
A member since 1987 of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), of which he had been serving as Foreign Secretary, he was a founding Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering, past president of Sigma Xi, and of the National Association for Science, Technology and Society, Editor-in-Chief of The Bridge, the journal of the NAE, founder and co-editor of Technology In Society — An International Journal, and had authored over three hundred professional papers, and authored, co-authored or edited several books.
Dr. Bugliarello held a Doctor of Science degree in engineering from MIT, and honorary degrees from Carnegie-Mellon University, the University of Trieste, the Milwaukee School of Engineering, the Illinois Institute of Technology, Pace University, Trinity College, the University of Minnesota and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
A founding member of the Marconi Society, Dr. Bugliarello was one of a select group of top corporate and institutional executives who early in the Society’s history helped Gioia Marconi Braga raise funds for the its endowment. He also served first as the organization’s secretary, then as its president. While he was president of Polytechnic, the Society was headquartered there and enjoyed the resources of Polytechnic for several years. After the Marconi Society’s move to Columbia, he continued to be involved and served a term on the Selection Advisory Committee as well as remaining on the board until his death.
In 2009, the Marconi Society honored Dr. Bugliarello with a special “Beacon of Light” award at a gala at Columbia University.
