Dev Depavali: Lord Jagannath pays homage to his ancestors

The three day long ritual Dev Deepavali was concluded tonight with Lord Jagannath paying homages to his ancestors amidst illumination of the entire Jagannath temple with diyas from top to bottom. During these three days a set of complex rituals was observed and the temple from top to bottom was illuminated by a large number of 'Diyas'. The servitors climbed to the top of the temple and lighted diyas which presented a treat for the devotees. The elaborate display of fireworks from the temple top illuminating the sky enthralled the devotees. This ritual is popularly called Dev Dipavali among the devotees. During these three days lakhs of devotees thronged this holy city to witness the lighting of diyas on the top of the temple 'Amolaka' and display of fireworks. On the first day he offered Pinda (obsequies) in favour of Mythological king Indradyumna who established the lords in this temple and asked for a boon to end his dynasty so that none of his successors and family members could claim their right over the temple and the deity.

The boon was granted by the Lord Jagannath and the dynasty of Indradyumna ended on earth.The lord himself offers Pinda to his ardent devotee Indradyumna.

As incarnation of Sri Ram he too offered pinda to king Dasarath. On the second day as Krishna he offered Pinda to his original parents Basudev and Devaki and on the third day he offered Pinda to his foster parents Nanda and Jashoda. The temple administration had taken special measures for completion of all the nitees and rituals in time. Lakhs of devotees feasted mahaprasad during these three days.

Today being the last day of the festival a large number of devotees had flocked into this city. A number of institutions staged bhajan recital programmes for the devotees in front of the temple main gate known as Lions gate.
