Heavyweight Tony Thompson (38-3, 26 KOs) scored an exciting fifth round stoppage over 2008 Olympian and British heavyweight champ David Price (15-2, 13 KOs) on Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool. Price almost got revenge for his KO loss to Thompson in February when he dropped Thompson in round two, but Thompson turned the tables to pummel Price in round five to get the stoppage. Time was 1:55.
Thompson survived a hard second round knockdown courtesy of a David Price right hand. With a real slugfest shaping up, southpaw Thompson had Price under heavy fire in the fourth and especially in the fifth. Price, unable to hold his man, was looking exhausted as he ate a ton of lefts and rights to the head. Backed into a corner in the fifth and appearing all done, Price was given a count and was then deemed too hurt to go on. There were no complaints.
Kevin Satchell of Liverpool retained his British and Commonwealth flyweight titles with a hard fought, at times thrilling 12 round UD over fellow unbeaten Ian Butcher. Surviving a heavy 2nd round knockdown when a right hand to the head had his legs all over the place, the defending champ beat the count somehow and battled back. It was nip and tuck the rest of the way and both men threw plenty of leather. Satchell is now 11-0 (2). Butcher, who can come again, is now 8-1 (3).
Liverpool light middle Neil Perkins kept his perfect record in improving to 4-0 (1) with a six round shutout over 24 bout veteran Dan Blackwell. Perkins bloodied Blackwell’s nose and also impressed with his body work. The Liverpool man, a southpaw, won by a 60-54 margin.
Darren Hamilton retained his British light welterweight belt for the third time with a convincing 12 round unanimous decision over a confident but ultimately out-fought and outworked Adil Anwar. After a reasonably bright start by the cocky, hands held low challenger from Leeds, Hamilton of london took over. Belting his man with stiff jabs and rights and lefts to the chin, the defending champ was all bysiness, ignoring Anwar’s showboating. The late rounds saw Anwar having to dig deep so as to see the final bell. Hamilton though, is no huge puncher. The winner improved to 14-2 (3). Anwar fell to 19-2 (7).
Unbeaten light middle Marcin Marczak out pointed a durable Kevin McCauley over four entertaining if onesided rounds to improve to 7-0 (3). McCauley fell to 11-56-3 (0). “The Polish Express” enjoyed a vocal supporting crowd.
Travis Dickinson won a competitive six rounder at light heavyweight as he out pointed game 32 bout veteran Nathan King. Dickinson landed plenty of right hands but King was tough indeed. The score was 59-56 and Dickinson improved to 15-1 (5).
