Number of older workers hits record high

Labour market figures released yesterday show that the number of people aged 50-64 in employment continues to rise, hitting a new record level of 8.26 million. There are 229,000 more people in this age group in work than a year ago. The rise was fairly evenly split between men and women. More than two-thirds (68%) of the overall increase in the number of people aged 16+ in employment has been among those aged 50+.

The number of those aged 65+ in work has not grown as quickly in recent months, but there are 52,000 more people in this age group working than a year ago.
