Visit to the Epping Ongar Railway

The DPS and Epping Ongar Railway are pleased to announce that 55019 ‘ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER’ will be visiting the line for its diesel gala on September 17/18 (running on September 16 to be confirmed). In addition, there will be Footplate Experience opportunities available with the loco in the week leading up to the event – more details to follow in due course.

The visit of one of our ‘Deltics’ to the Epping Ongar Railway, which runs over lines which once formed part of the London Underground network, is one that has been undergoing negotiation for three years. Other commitments, including visits to other lines, have meant this was not possible until this year.

Members Day at Barrow Hill – Saturday 19th March

The DPS will be holding a members/new volunteers day at the DPS depot at Barrow Hill on Saturday 19th March. Although D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ and 55019 ‘ROYAL HIGHLAND FUSILIER’ will not be present, there will be plenty to see and do. Come and see developments at the depot itself, progress on D9015 ‘TULYAR’ and the bogies, behind the scenes tours of the power units (not normally available) and view the work being undertaken by our tenants.

If you’re thinking of helping out, you can also see what our small band of volunteers do on a typical working day. We intend to hold two sessions during the day (am and pm) – times and more details to follow soon.

Annual Auction – final listing

This final listing of items in the DPS action at the National Railway Museum in York this Saturday can be found by CLICKING HERE. As per the PDF, bids are also being accepted by Ray via text or e-mail too – so no excuse not to bid if you’re not attending!

The day promises to be an entertaining one – the DPS Annual General Meeting starts at 11.00 (doors open at 10.00) and should finish by 13.00. After a break for lunch, there is the ‘Lord Nelson Memorial Lecture’, at which we are delighted to welcome Martin Walker of Beaver Sports as guest speaker who will talk about his experiences as owner of ‘Royal Scots Grey’ and ‘Gordon Highlander’. This will be followed by the auction.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to these events taking place, the DPS depot will NOT be open on Saturday 5th March.

DPS depot open tomorrow (February 27th)

Further to last week’s message, we are pleased to confirm the DPS depot will be open tomorrow. Barrow Hill will be celebrating the 25th anniversary of the roundhouse’s closure, and train rides will be available (£5 per person) between 10.30 and 15.00.

Lord Nelson Memorial Lecture – Saturday 5th March 2016

The DPS is pleased to advise members that the Lord Nelson Memorial Lecture at this year’s AGM at York is to be given by Martin Walker of Beaver Sports.  Martin will be entertaining attendees about his experiences with being owner of ‘Royal Scots Grey’ and ‘Gordon Highlander’. This will be the first time in the history of the DPS that another owner of Class 55s have outlined their anecdotes to operating their particular Deltics.

Murray Brown, Chairman, said “we are most grateful to Martin for accepting this invitation, especially at short notice, and it promises to be a most entertaining presentation”.

D9009 now at York

The light engine move of D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ from Derby to York, following its repaint at RVEL, sponsored by Avocet Travel Management, took place on February 21 as planned. It was the loco’s first outing on the main line in BR blue under its own power since January 2nd 1982, when it was standby loco for the ‘Deltic Scotsman Farewell’. Our thanks go to DCR for facilitating the movement. A couple of photos from the day can be seen below:

D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ on the move today

D9009 ‘ALYCIDON’ is due to be released from RVEL at Derby later today and will run light engine to the National Railway Museum at York – its first outing in blue on the main line since January 2nd 1982. Departure from Derby is expected to be at 14.01, arriving at York just before 16.00. For full timings, and to follow the move, please see

Volunteer’s View – February 13th 2016

This week’s update from the DPS at Barrow Hill, courtesy of Graham Clarke:

The concrete outside the power unit store and in front of the container is laid (complete with fox and cat footprints). A huge amount of earth has gone off site to make way for the footings. Thanks to Mike, Steve and Swallow Construction who built the depot originally as well.

John painted generator ducts, Ray maintained the emergency light batteries.

I worked with Tom on removing the old flexible conduit and fittings that went to no.1 traction motor. This is a difficult job, because they are so old, rock hard and utterly shot. This is in preparation for replacing 8 of the original traction motor cables that were stripped out some time ago.

Thanks to everyone for their sterling efforts last week.

DPS Depot closed on February 20th

Please note that the DPS depot will be closed to the public on Saturday 20th February, due to work being undertaken on our locos at other locations. Details regarding opening the following Saturday will be advised nearer the time.
