CLEVELAND -- Ohio men's basketball junior forward Antonio Campbell (Cincinnati, Ohio) has been named the 2016 Mid-American Conference Player of the Year, as announced by the league office on Wednesday (March 9).

Campbell becomes the ninth Bobcat to earn the league's highest honor and gives Ohio 11 MAC Player of the Year selections in program history. He joins Ken Kowall (1971), Walter Luckett (1974), John Deveraux (1984), Paul Graham (1989), Dave Jamerson (1990), Lewis Geter (1992), Gary Trent (1993, '94, '95) and D.J. Cooper (2013) on Ohio's MAC Player of the Year list.



"Huge thank you to everyone that voted for me," said Campbell. "It's a great honor to put my name alongside all of the other Bobcat legends that have won MAC Player of the Year."

Campbell dominated in conference play, averaging a league-high 10.5 boards per game and ranking third with 19.1 points and 1.4 blocks per game. The First Team All-MAC pick ranked third in the conference with a 57.4 percent (136-of-237) field goal percentage and shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from beyond the arc -- good for sixth in the league. Campbell earned YP.com MAC East Division Player of the Week honors twice.

Through 30 starts in 2015-16, Campbell leads Ohio in scoring with 17.5 points per game (fourth in MAC), a 58.1 percent field goal percentage (205-of-353; second in MAC, 32nd in NCAA), 6.8 field goals made per game, 11.8 field goals attempted per game, 10.0 rebounds per game (second in MAC, 23rd in NCAA) and 1.7 blocks per game (second in MAC, 84th in NCAA). He also ranks second on the team with 2.5 free throws made per game and 3.5 free throw attempts per game and third with 1.3 three-point field goals made per game and 3.1 three-point field goal attempts per game.

Campbell has finished in double figures in scoring a team-high 25 times and in rebounding a team-high 17 times. He has notched a team-high 15 double-doubles -- good for 22nd in the country. He has scored at least 13 points a team-high 11 times -- including scoring a career-high 33 points on Feb. 16, 2016, in an 86-64 triumph over MAC West Division foe Eastern Michigan. Campbell has led the Bobcats in scoring a team-high 13 times while leading the squad in rebounding a team-high times. He collected a career-high 20 rebounds as Ohio beat MAC East Division archrival Miami, 76-64, on Feb. 20 in a 'Battle of the Bricks' showdown at the Convo.

"Tony's growth as a player over the course of the season was really fun to be a part of," said second-year head coach Saul Phillips. "He's as versatile as any player I've ever coached."

Campbell has helped lead the Bobcats (20-10, 11-7 MAC) to a 10-win improvement in 2015-16. Ohio is the No. 2 seed in the 2016 MAC Tournament presented by VisitMyrtleBeach.com and will square off against No. 7-seeded Northern Illinois (21-11, 9-9 MAC) on Thursday (March 10) at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland. The Bobcats and the Huskies split the regular season series, with Northern Illinois taking an 80-69 victory in the 2016 conference opener on Jan. 6 in DeKalb, Ill., and Ohio coming away victorious at the Convo on Feb. 6 with an 80-69 triumph.
