War of 1812
Ogres vs. Bretonnians

The Game
Each army was permitted up to (and not over at all) and including 1812 points. This was an Ogren idea, and it was quite cool - the War of 1812 all over again, but this time it was Warhammer style.

The game was played on a 6 x 4 ft table with only three small stands of trees set up - one in the centre left, one in the dead centre, and one in the centre right.

The Game Objective was to acquire as many Victory Points as possible.

The Game's end was set at the usual 6 Rounds, though we both agreed that if we had time, we would go until one of the armies was totally destroyed. Now that's a battle!

The armies deployed lengthwise along the 6 ft edge up to 12 inches in.

We rolled to see who was to Deploy first and the Ogres had to, and once all of the army was on the table, then the Bretonnians arrived and deployed (we opt to do this in order to save time and to be a bit more accurate, as in a real battle the combatants do not take turns, unit type by unit type, etc. until all are on, though we do honour the "Scouts" rule for deploying if any are used).

War of 1812
Ogres vs. Bretonnians

The Battle

Round 1

The Ogres - The ground shook as the Ogren army advanced first all across the line. On their far right, the Hunter and his trusty feline hunters moved up. To hie immediate left the Gnoblar unit also moved up, followed closely behind by the 4 Leadbelchers. In the Ogre centre, the Butcher and his 5 Bulls moved up, and on their left the 4 Ironguts primed their cannons as they too joined in. On the far Ogren left the Bruiser and his huge unit of 8 Bull companions advanced towards the stand of tree in the table's centre. The whole third of the table to the left of the Ogres was empty. The Gorger unfortunately was unable to be a part of ROund 1.

No Magic, No Missile, No Melee this Round.

The Bretonnians - Thankful to enjoy the full Blessings of the Lady, the armour of 35 Knights glinted brightly in the sun as the army came to life and moved as one in a sudden flash, catching some of the enemy by surprise.

The Knights of the Realm with the Damsel on the Bretonnian's centre charged immediately into the Butcher and his 5 Bulls and killed 2 of them. Unable to cause any Wounds on their shiny enemy, the Ogres fled and were caught and destroyed. Nearby, the unit of 4 Leadbelchers and the Gnoblars lost their nerve and fled away.

Elsewhere, the units all advanced, except for the Pegasus Knights, who waited patiently for the right moment behind the stand of trees in the table centre.

No Magic, No Missiles.

Round 2

The Ogres - Luckily, once they were away from the fray, the Leadbelchers managed to rally, but the Gnoblars kept fleeing. This caused the Hunter to have to test, but he dug in his heels and prepared for battle. The Gorger thought it best to wait yet again before joining in what was already proving to be a bloody battle.

No Magic.

Missile - The Hunter and the Bruiser were both unable to get a shot away at the enemy.

No Melee.

The Bretonnians - The General and his Questing Knights (just to the left of the army centre) charged into the Hunter, using the Banner of Chalons to Ward off any shots from their cannon-toting target. The Knights of the Realm (and Damsel) who had just finished taking care of the Butcher and his Bulls, turned and charged into the rear of the Gnoblars, who immediately fled right off the table.
The Pegasus Knights saw an opportunity and followed their Paladin Battle Standard Bearer in a charge into the right flank of the Bruiser and his Bulls. The Knights of the Realm to the right of the Pegasus Knights, followed their Paladin in a charge into the front of the Bruiser's unit.
On the Bretonnian far left, the unit of Knights of the Realm moved between the stand of trees and the edge of the table and finished their movement 6 inches away from and facing the right flank of the Hunter.

Magic - The Damsel cast "The Wolf Hunts" on the unit facing the Hunter's right flank, which gave them more than enough distance to make the charge!

Melee - The Hunter was in a very bad spot it seemed - he was face to face with a suped-up Bretonnian Paladin General with 8 Questing Knights in tow and a Banner that would not allow him to use his firepower. On his right flank he had also been charged by 8 Knights of the Realm! Very surprisingly, this massive Bretonnian attack produced not a single wound on the Hunter, though it managed to kill 1 of the Sabretusks. On the reciprocal attack, the Hunter reduced the General by 1 Wound. Quite a dull round of combat, even though the charge included 19 Knightly attacks and 16 horse attacks! The Hunter easily absorbed 35 Bretonnian charging attacks, but he lost combat 7-0. He failed his test and fled right off the table.

The Pegasus Knights and the Knights of the Realm in their charge on the Bruiser and his Bulls resulted in the Ogres suffering 13 Wounds, fully killing 4 Bulls. The bruiser, clearly not impressed and not intimidated in the least, raised his mighty Thundermace and struck back at Strength 8! Thans be to the Lady, all of the Thundermace's attacks were saved by the Bretonnians' armour. In Combat Resolution, the Bretonnians claimed a 20-0 victory over the Bruiser, who could not keep his unit from fleeing and being caught and destroyed by the Knights of the Realm. Things were not going well for the Ogres, but they still had some serious game left on the table. Would it be enough to turn the tide of the battle?

Round 3
The Ogres - Finally, thanks be to Shrek, the Gorger was placed on the table. Would he be the one to stem the tide? Only a unit of 4 Leadbelchers and a unit of 4 Ironguts were left on the table to carry the fight to the Bretonnians who had as yet, not lost a single model.

Turning to face the Knights of the Realm with the Damsel (just destroyed the Gnoblars), the Leadbelchers released a deadly salvo and blasted the Knights with 22 Hits!!! Luckily, 8 Wounds beat the Bretonnian Armour Save, and the Lady's Blessing did nothing, so 7 Knights and the Damsel were removed, leaving a single, solitary Knight. For some reason, he did not flee.

The Bretonnians - The Questing Knights and their General turned to their right to face the Gorger, a mere 5 inches away. The Knights of the Realm on the far left charged into the left flank of the Leadbelchers, desperately seeking revenge. The Paladin BSB and his unit of Pegasus Knights charged into the rear of the Ironguts, as did the Knights of the Realm unit with their Paladin. The remaining single Knight of the Realm model charged directly into the front of the Ironguts.

In Close Combat, the Knights of the Realm with the Paladin killed 3 of the Ironguts, and the Paladin on the Pegasus finished off the remaining Ogre (12 Wounds in total) in that unit, not needing at all the rest of the attacks from the Pegasus knights and the Pegasi. In other Melee action, the Leadbelchers suffered 9 Wounds (3 dead), and the remaining Ogre was unable to cause any harm to his assailants and fled, having lost Combat Resolution 14-0. He was immediately caught and destroyed. And thus the Ogre army was all but destroyed, having only the Gorger left to fight with.

Round 4
The Ogres - The Gorger, taking matters into his own hands, charged into the Knights of the Realm with the Paladin (that had attacked with the Pegasus Knights) and caused 3 Wounds, but the Lady's Blessing intervened and saved her Knights. In their reciprocal attacks, the Knights caused 3 Wounds, reducing the Gorger to only 1 Wound. Unbreakable, the Gorger stood firm, awaiting the inevitable.

The Bretonnians - The Pegasus Knights charged into the rear of the Gorger and killed him, while the rest of the army had turned to watch what proved to be the final action of the Game.

Battle Summary

Victory Points

The Ogres
8 Knights of the Realm with Full Command = 192 pts.
1 Damsel = 169 pts.
TOTAL= 361 pts.

The Bretonnians
Entire Ogre Army @ 1810 pts. = 1810 pts.
Enemy General Slain = + 100 pts
(no idea about Ogren Banners & don't count "Table Quarters")
TOTAL = 1910 pts.

Bretonnian 1910 pts. - Ogre's 361 pts. = Bretonnian Victory by 1549 pts. = Massacre

Bretonnian General's Comments
It was not the washout it might seem to have been - those Ogres each have many Wounds (3 each) and so the 36 Wounds of the Bretonnian Knights were facing about 75 Ogren wounds, not counting the Gnoblars and the Sabretusks! The shooting ability of the Leadbelchers alone was terrifying - it took only 4 of them to kill 8 Knights in 1 volley! Geesh. And let's not forget about the staying power of that Hunter who sustained 35 Bretonnian charge attacks, and then proceeded to bash the Bretonnian General and half kill him!
Sure, I am glad for the victory, but it is difficult to feel secure when you face the Ogres - they are all so big and tough and you have to slug it out to the max just to kill a few of them. I relied on trying to win Combat Resolution by outnumbering and outranking the enemy and thus getting them to flee if possible, as I was confident my 3D6 Pursuit roll would almost be guaranteed to catch and destroy them. I am not sure if my opponent was ever too shocked in the game - he knew I would come in fast and hard - but I for one was absolutely shocked by the staying power of the Hunter and the firepower of the Leadbeltchers. W-O-W.
