Sir Charlie Mayfield and Andy Street, CBE

Chairman and Managing Director, John Lewis

The last decade has seen John Lewis increase its sales by over 50%, receive a Royal Warrant, open 18 new stores, and secure the British public’s lasting affection through iconic Christmas adverts and a focus on the customer experience. The men responsible, Charlie Mayfield and Andy Street, have been leading the partnership since 2007 when Mayfield became chairman, appointing Street as his MD. Mayfield joined John Lewis in 2000 as head of business development having started out as an officer in the army, moving into the retail world after some time with Lucozade and McKinsey & Co. Andy Street began his career at John Lewis straight after graduating from Oxford, and worked his way to becoming director of personnel in 2002 and a member of the partnership board. He was voted ‘Most Admired Leader’ in 2014 by Management Today magazine. The last year has seen significant growth in John Lewis’s online business despite a slight drop in footfall, and the future looks bright for Mayfield, Street and their partners.
