Justin Welby

Archbishop of Canterbury

Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby is the principal leader of the Church of England and the symbolic head of the worldwide Anglican Communion. Welby’s career began in the oil industry before he decided to study for ordination in 1989, and he was Bishop of Durham before becoming Archbishop. Today he is a widely-cited commentator on matters of national and international interest and a spokesperson for the Church of England. Last year he offered his support to British participation in the air strikes on Syria, with the reservation that they could have the counter-productive effect of strengthening Islamic State’s resolve and increasing its support.
