Johnson Chang

Gallerist and curator Johnson Chang founded Hanart TZ Gallery in Hong Kong in 1993 and was a pioneer in introducing contemporary Chinese art to international exhibitions in the 80s and 90s when he brought many emerging artists into the limelight. Through his Hanart TZ Gallery, he organized exhibitions of the Taiwanese sculptor Ju Ming at the Singapore Art Museum in 1986 and Place Vendôme in Paris in 1997. It was also with Hanart TZ that he staged the exhibition ‘China’s New Art Post-1989’, which debuted at the 1993 Hong Kong Arts Festival and toured the USA from 1995 to 1997. In 2010, Chang organised ‘West Heavens’, a contemporary art project in Shanghai that facilitated and showcased collaborations between Chinese and Indian artists. He is a guest professor of the China Academy of Art in Hangzhou and was named in 2010 Art Review Power 100 alongside Claire Hsu for their roles as co-founders of the Asia Art Archive (AAA).
