New leader elected for Romania's main opposition

BUCHAREST, June 30 (Xinhua) -- Romania's Senate President Vasile Blaga was elected on Saturday as the new leader of the Democratic Liberal Party at the main opposition's extraordinary National Convention.

"The Democratic Liberals have its door open to all who believe in the values of the Romanian Right, in a Romania of merit and truth, in a European Romania," said Blaga, after being announced as new party leader, with 1197 votes for and 28 against.

"An important objective that we propose is to rebuild the relationship between our party and Romanians, to regain the confidence of Romanians in the Democratic Liberal Party through better communication," said Blaga, the only candidate for the national chairmanship of the opposition party.

Blaga has been considered as a representative of the hard-line faction of the party. At the National Convention one year ago, he sought the presidential position in the party, but was defeated by Emil Boc, then prime minister of the country.

The Democratic Liberal Party held the one-day extraordinary National Convention to elect its new leadership, after Boc resigned on June 14 to assume political responsibility for the poor results obtained in local elections.

The extraordinary National Convention and the election of new leadership are believed to be an important step in the party's preparation for general elections at the end of this year.
