MCIRCC Critical Care and Domain Expertise Integration:

The programmatic research structure of MCIRCC is depicted in the figure below as a value stream matrix. This structure was created to allow the greatest possible use of both clinical and specialized field science domain expertise in a manner that uniquely leverages applications and discoveries across the major themes in critical care. The structure is aligned with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Road Map offering new opportunities:

  1. Create new pathways to discovery;
  2. Build research teams of the future;
  3. Re-engineer the clinical research enterprise as it relates to critical care.

This structure envisions the ability to take advantage of the commonalties of the pathophysiology of critical illness and injury to develop broad platform therapeutic and diagnostics, which can then be rapidly moved across the NIH Roadmap to their broadest translation and implementation in critical care. This strategy will assist in rapidly realizing a beneficial economy of scale that is attractive for both internal research and development as well as for research and development efforts of industrial partners and for funding agencies such as the Department of Defense wishing to see the greatest return on investment.
