Congressman Shimkus Has Easy Primary Win Over Kyle McCarter

Congressman John Shimkus won an easy victory over his Republican party challenger and current 54th District State Senator Kyle McCarter in Tuesday's election.  With 96 percent of the vote tallied (790 of 830 precincts), Shimkus had 71,759 or 61 percent of the vote to McCarter's 45,967 or 39 percent of the vote.

Shimkus thanked the people of the 15th Congressional District for their support and for allowing him the opportunity to serve them in Washington.  He's also thanking his opponent for a hard fought campaign.

"To all of our hardworking volunteers and supporters, I cannot thank you enough for the thousands of calls you made and doors you knocked," said Shimkus.  "Your hard work and dedication to spreading our conservative message throughout Central and Southern Illinois was essential to our victory."

Shimkus currently does not have an opponent in the November general election.

In Marion County, Shimkus beat McCarter 3,310 votes to 2,538 votes.
