Elevating quality

Established in 1976, Viña Luis Felipe Edwards is undeniably one of the most progressive wineries in Chile. Based in the Colchagua Valley, the operation sits nestled among the Alamos trees, separated from the colossal Andes by the smaller San Fernando ridge.

In the late 1990s, LFE pioneered the planting of vines on the steep, terraced slopes of the valley. Today, the family owns over 450 hectares of vineyard, over a third of which is planted on the hillsides. In 2005, a further 90 hectares of wine will be planted at between 800 and 1000 metres – representing the highest plantings in the Colchagua Valley. The vineyard sites are carefully selected using infrared imaging to match the

grape varieties to the appropriate plot. In addition, LFE also has one of the lowest yields in Chile of 9 tonnes per hectare, with yields as low as 4 tonnes per hectare from the high altitude sites. All of the above represents a huge investment into the long term quality of the wines. ‘‘This is just the start of a very long journey. It takes time to build real quality - fortunately we don’t have to answer to shareholders, just consumers!’’

The winery produces more than 1 million 9-litre cases per year and exports to over 40 countries, making it a major global player. Luis Felipe Edwards remains a family-run company, allowing greater control to ensure the LFE brand name is synonymous with quality and traditional family values.

The height of success

LFE has pushed its achievements to new heights early in 2008 with significant wins at the 5th Annual Wines of Chile Awards. Included in the accolades were both Best Value Red Trophy and Gold Medal for the LFE Reserva Cabernet Sauvignon 2006. LFE Reserva Carmenère 2006 won a Gold Medal, with two Silvers and a Bronze for Gran Reserva varietals.

This is just the start of LFE’s plans for success in 2008. A major overhaul of the portfolio has resulted in a clearer, more consumer-friendly structure to the ranges, with new labels about to be launched for the three different tiers of LFE
