ACM Creativity and Cognition 2017 Hosting Proposals

The ACM Creativity and Cognition Conference (CC) is a biennial conference attracting 100-250
delegates to the main (single-track) conference, and up to 100 delegates for workshops and
tutorial prior to the conference. CC also hosts and organizes an interactive art exhibition and
performances which run in parallel with the conference. We strive to encourage lively
interdisciplinary debate exploring methods and tools to support creativity at the intersection of art and technology.

For those interesting in hosting CC17, please send us a short pdf document by 24 Aug 2015
outlining the following aspects of your proposal. Please email your outline proposal to:

nickbk@acm.org

Team

Who will be your core team of Programme and Organizing Committees, and what roles will they
take? (e.g. General chair, Program chair(s), Local chair, Treasurer, Art Chair, Posters and
demonstrations, Tutorials, Doctoral consortium, Workshops, etc.)
What experience does your team have in organizing conferences and exhibitions?
What experience does your team have of attending and participating in previous Creativity and
Cognition conferences?
How will you ensure that the presentations include papers from the art and design perspective
alongside CHI, computing, and psychology perspectives?
Please note - to reflect the interdisciplinary nature of the conference we recommend a strong
Programme Chair, and in the past we have had multi-disciplinary Programme co-chairs to reflect
the broad audience for CC e.g. Design+Psychology+Art+ICT co-chairs, who should have been
closely involved in CC programme work in the past. Also, a requirement of the ACM is that as a
minimum, the General Chair and the Treasurer should be, or be willing to become, members of
the ACM.

Location

Where are you proposing to host the conference?
What makes your location ideal for a Creativity and Cognition conference?
What facilities are available for:
- Main conference venue (up to 100-250 people for paper presentations)
- Workshops and tutorials (up to 100 people in total)
- Art exhibition
- Poster exhibition/ demos
- Performance

How close venues to each other, potential accommodation, and interesting locations nearby?
Are there points of local interest that might be relevant to conference attendees e.g. arts groups,
labs, etc.?
Are there any events/ festivals/ other activities that might be good to co-ordinate the conference
with?
What connections do you have with local and national arts groups/ committees, and scientific
communities?

Finance

What are ball-park figures for costs of hosting the conference e.g. room hire, admin support, etc.?
What sponsorship are you able to attract?
Do you have support (financial/ volunteer/ admin) from your institution?
Please note - Creativity and Cognition conferences are sponsored by the ACM, so you will need
to liaise with the ACM about budgets and underwriting the conference. The conference is
expected to break even financially. We can provide full examples of previous financial planning
documents as will be required by the ACM.

Planning

How will you go about organizing the conference logistics?
What is your provisional timeline for conference organization?

Digital Arts at CHI 2013

Here are some ideas we had for the CHI conference and that we would very much value your views on:

·      Creating a high quality printed catalogue (with links to online interactive content) of the best art artifacts shown at CHI.
·      A curated and professionally exhibited art gallery could be proposed for CHI, with demonstration level art still shown in the Interactivity section.
·      This year we had three artists supported by Adobe. Given similar support in the future, we could have a SIG or similar slot for them to publically present themselves to CHI.
·      Joining with the other communities in focused calls. For example, the Urban XD SIG (Designing Interactions in the Networked City) is interested in relevant art interventions as a way of probing futures.

We hope you'll come up with more suggestions of your own.

Mission

The Creativity, Cognition and Art (CCaA) community brings together HCI researchers supporting user creativity, digital arts practitioner researchers and human factors researchers focused on creativity. Its aim is to encourage and enliven creative practice using digital technology and HCI research that helps expand human creativity. The primary purpose of this community is to promote and develop the Creativity and Cognition (C&C) SIGCHI conferences and, equally, the CHI conference Digital Arts community. This is a group for all who are excited by the digital arts, creativity and Human-Computer Interaction.
