Films add glamour to harvest festival
|

SOME HALF a dozen films will hit the silver screen on January 15 to keep movie buffs flitting from one cinema to another during Pongal holiday. One of them will be released on January 11. It is "Anbe Sivam" in which Kamal Hassan and Madhavan are teaming up for the first time. The film is going to be daringly different from the recent Kamal films as fans are going to see Kamal sharing his histrionics in the film. The producers are sure that the film will fetch them a National Award. Whether it will go to Kamal or the film is anybody's guess. That is why they have had it censored well before December 31, 2002, and made sure that the film is entered in the 2002 awards list.
The story goes like this. Kamal and Madhavan become good friends. Both start their journey from Bhubaneswar to Chennai. The travel takes them nearly four days. What happens in those days is the story wherein both Kamal and Madhavan try to over score each other in acting. Kiran has done a role that should have gone to Nandita Das and there is no element of any glamour. The get-up of Kamal will be the talking point of the film. Special material was brought from his U.S. makeup specialist Michael Westmore. Big sets have been erected not for any song but for situations such as Orissa flood, Bhubaneswar railway station.
For the first time, director Sunder C. and Kamal have joined hands. Incidentally, Kamal has written the story and screenplay. Cartoonist Madhan has written the dialogue and is also doing a small role in the film. Nasser, Yugi Sethu, Santhana Bharathi, Uma, Viswanath and `Pasi' Sathya have done the main roles in the film. Arthur Wilson has handled the camera, Prabhakar has taken care of the art section, Vidyasagar has scored music, Chinni Prakash and Brindha have choreographed the dances. Vikram Dharma has composed the stunt scenes, Vairamuthu and Pralayan have written the lyrics, Saisuresh has done the editing, K. Muralidharan, V. Swaminathan and G. Venugopal have produced the film.

Then we have "Sokka Thangam" from G. V. Films' G. Venkateswaran. The story is about a brother and sister who have a bond. The parents want them to marry into a family that has siblings with the same sentiment. But this lands Vijayakanth, who has other ideas, in trouble. K. Baghyaraj, the master storyteller, is back after sometime. With a big banner like G. V. Films, Vijayakanth as the hero and Soundarya as the heroine, the film has aroused high expectations. One must wait and see. Vijayakanth stayed put at the shooting spot for 79 days. The film was finished in record time and the cast includes Uma, Swathi, Sriman, Prakash Raj, Goundamani, Senthil, Ponnambalam, Vinu Chakravarthy, S. S. Chandran, Thyagu, T. P. Gajendran, C. R. Saraswathy and Sindhu. Camera is by M. V. Paneerselvam, music is by Deva, art is by Santhanam and lyrics are written by Pa. Vijay, Snehan, R. V. Udayakumar and Thamarai. Editing is by Mohan Kumar. Stunts are by Rocky Rajesh, dances are by D. K. S. Babu and the film is produced by G. Venkateswaran. The story, screenplay, dialogue and direction are by K. Bhagyaraj.
For director Dharani this is a test of a different kind. His earlier film "Dhil" was a runaway success and he is to repeat this in his next venture. So he has taken a subject, which has all the ingredients that fills the coffers for 100 days. Director Dharani says that his ultimate aim is to satisfy his fans and Vikram's, who are eagerly awaiting the film "Dhool". "I am sure they will not be disappointed. It is a star-studded entertainment-oriented film." The star cast includes Mayilsamy, Shayaji Shinde, Chittibabu and Kotachi. Cinematography is by Gopinath. Dialogue is written by Barathan. Music is composed by Vidyasagar. V. T. Vijayan has taken care of the editing. Arivumathi, Kabilan, Pa. Vijay and Na. Muthukumar have written the lyrics. Art direction is by Maniraj. Kalyan has choreographed the dance sequences. `Rocky' Rajesh has taken care of the fights. Dharani has handled the story, screenplay and direction. A. M. Rathnam has produced the film.
For Vijay, this time it is "Vaseegara", Shots and Stills (India) Private Ltd.'s maiden venture which has beautiful locations in New Zealand for a song, centred on Sneha's eyes which inspire Vijay, an artist. It is a love story with a difference. Apart from Vijay and Sneha, the cast includes Gayathri Jayaram, Vadivelu, Nasser, Manivannan, Sriman, Mayilsamy, Kamalesh, Vasu Vikram, Chaplin Balu, Meera Krishnan, Mano Chitra and Arthi. Both Suhasini and Pandiyarajan are doing important roles in the film. Cinematography is by Balasubramaniyam, editing by V. T. Vijayan, art by Nagu, stunts by `Rakki' Rajesh, dance by Saroj Khan, Suchitra, Sivshanker and Dinesh. Lyrics are by Pa. Vijai and Na. Muthukumar. Story, dialogue and direction are by K. Selvabharathi who has done two films with Vijay. They are "Ninaithen Vanthai" and "Priyamanavale".
Kanakadara Movies' "Ramachandra" is an action-oriented film with Satyaraj in the lead as a police officer. The director, Raj Kapoor, says that the film will showcase the good aspects of a police officer in a new way. "Sathyaraj is a good officer who is transferred from one place to another mainly as he does not toe the line of the political bigwigs of the place. He comes to Chennai where he is confronted with a difficult problem. How he meets the challenge is the climax of the film," says Raj Kapoor who has also taken care of story, screenplay and dialogue. Satyaraj had to have his head tonsured and the actor made the director act in a small villain role for which the director also had to have his head shaved. Vijayalakshmi, Ashish Vidyarthi, Delhi Ganesh, Ponnambalam and Raj Kapoor make up the cast. Deva has scored the music, Pa. Vijay has written the lyrics, Nagu has done the art works, and "Super" Subbarayan has taken care of the stunts.
Producer Chozha Ponnurangam is sure that his fourth film, "Kaalaatpadai" led by a youth brigade, will certainly hit the bull's eye and give him both money and awards. He has also had his film censored before December 31, having an eye on the awards. "In every film from my first one, I have introduced some artistes and technicians in my films. In the first film "Thalai Vaasal" Vichitra and `Thalai Vasal' Vijay were introduced. In the second film "Amaravathi" it was Ajith and Sangavi. In the third film "Sathisanam" Jayaprakash was there and in this film we are introducing eight new faces.

The hero is Jai who has the look and height and also necessary acting talent." The story revolves round eight college students who get separated because of a girl and how they get united in the end. For director J. Ramesh this is his maiden venture and he has to his credit more than 45 tele-films. He has written three songs in the film. He has written the story, screenplay and dialogue.
The new find cast has Jai, Vidhu, Vijai Ganesh, Arun, Antony, Santhosh, Amit, Riyaz and Srini. The other known faces are Kuyili, Rajasekar, Jothi, Radha Ravi, Livingston, Thalai Vasal Vijay and Thennavan.
Dances are choreographed by Balaji, music is composed by Bharadwaj, editing is done by Ragubob, art is by Sheiki, camera is handled by Seenu, and the story, screenplay, dialogue, lyrics and direction are by J. Ramesh.
