Republic of Srpska is unitary state. The first level subdivision - communities (opštine) correspond to the second level subdivisions of the same name in the Federation, i.e. there are no cantons level subdivision in Srpska.

The flag of the Republic of Srpska is the traditional Serb tricolour of red over blue over white. The coat of arms is based on the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Serbia before World War I, with a few significant differences: the crown is in he shield and not atop of it and there are no fleurs-de-lis between the eagle's talons.
Since 14 June 2007 the coat of arms is abolished and not in official use.
It is not uncommonly seen in the Republic of Srpska, even in official use, several variations of the flag that are the tricolour defaced with various emblems - the cross with four S's, the coat of arms etc. Such flags are not officially sanctioned, but are tolerated. Also, they can be found in some vexillologic sources, that sometimes altogether neglects the pure tricolour. For examples of such flags see links above.

The coat of arms of Srpska was found unconstitutional by the Constitutional Counrt of Bosnia and herzegovina and the article of the law prescribing it were abolished on 14 June 2007. As a temporary solution until the adoption of a new coat of arms, the Parliament of Srpska (Narodna skupština) decided to use an emblem. The emblem is a with two yellow lines bordered circular emlem with a round area coloured as the the flag of Srpska defaced with stylized letters "RS" surrounded with golden oak wreath with red-blue-white tricolor ribbon in its base. Within the edge of emblem there is an inscription "Republika Srpska" (in Cyrillic and Latin), in the bottom is the crown of Kotromanić and in the chief the Obrenović Royal crown.
The Parliament issued a competition for the new coat of arms, considered some proposals, but did not adopt any other coat of arms and the emblem in used in its stead.
