Cops: PetSmart groomer attacked by mastiff

A female groomer at a PetSmart store in South Philadelphia was attacked by a customer's bullmastiff, police said Tuesday.

The 26-year-old woman suffered cuts to her hand, arm and ankle, and was taken to Methodist Hospital, police said.

The incident happened about 7:50 a.m. Tuesday when the employee was trying to groom the dog, police said. The mastiff then attacked a Pomeranian in the grooming area of the store on the 2300 block of Oregon Avenue, according to police and a spokeswoman for PetSmart.

The mastiff was contained and held by the store manager until its owner arrived and took the dog, police said.

The PetSmart spokeswoman said they "have not uncovered any external factors that provoked this behavior." The employee, she said, has been released from the hospital.
