Time Lapse Warns Us to Never Toy With Time at Fantasia Fest
What if a simple photograph could show you the future? Would you refuse to believe it? Or would you ignore it and carry on with your lives, never caring whether or not you've reached the point you've already witnessed? When three good friends discover a machine that does just that--one that takes a photograph of moments in the future--plans to use the contraption to their own benefit arises. Of course, anything involving money and greed usually go terribly wrong, as it is in this case. The photographs soon begin to display a future they would rather never see, panic unfolds, relationships deteriorate, and a lot is lost in the process. If anything, we've already been warned, by the man who toyed most with this complex device. As Jasper, played by George Finn, said: "Don't fuck with time."
But what exactly does that mean? The deeper we dive into this film, an outstanding 104-minute debut for Bradley King, the more we question the simple notion of time itself, its rules, its causes and effects. We are constantly kept on the edge of our seats, hearts racing throughout, always eager to find out what the next photograph will represent. We already called it--Jasper was insane from the beginning, Finn (Matt O'Leary) was too blinded by his desire to produce new art to realize what was unfolding before it was too late. And Callie...Poor Callie. What were you thinking? With such a remarkable performance put on by Danielle Panabaker (Arrow, Friday the 13th), it is no wonder many begin to doubt towards the end of the film who they can actually trust. When you know your future is at stake, how far would you go to fix it?
If there's any sci-fi/thriller worth seeing this year, Time Lapse makes the cut. Having received 3 awards and 1 nomination since its initial release in May 2014, it is understandable how they managed to sell out both screenings at the Fantasia International Film Festival in so little time. Bradley King and BP Cooper have put together an impeccable story, the former perfectly transmitting it to screen--no awkward moments, excellent framing and pacing, and a surprise at the end that could not have been predicted. We are definitely eager for what else this team has in store.
Kavale is a young r&b artist from Toronto who has a musical background growing up participating in a school choir. His mix of influences gives him an edge and vocal contrast, mixing up melodies and rythms, classic vs modern in order to reach a wide audience. His latest track titled "Hold On" showcases his vocal talents, layered over a simple choir-like beat, putting him on the map riding the crest of another wave of young artists itching to prove themselves, hungry to take the next step. ...

When the beat kicks in on this one, you'll probably do a double-take. 20 year old Montreal rapper Jason Shay litterally came out of nowhere (at least for me). His latest track "For You" is part of his latest mixtape and features a captivating beat produced by himself with the help of beautiful violin strokes from French violinist Marika. It's the type of beat that is solid from beginning to end, layered with his lyrical skills, an ability that is not necessarily easy to execute the way he did....

Noble Oak is a Toronto based multi-instrumentalist artist/producer. His latest track “All I Said” is from his forthcoming debut album Past Life, to be released later this spring. It's about being unable to change things about ourselves that we realize may be our own demise. It's about knowing that every perspective, mindset and feeling is temporary, not permanent. The blissful track has a very attractive melody and easy-to-listen to vocals, the type that will let you get lost in your own...

There has been some improvements made when it comes to body-image social issues when it comes to modeling, aka, the term 'plus-size modeling'. It's a term I am still sort of uncomfortable with, because, well, there shouldn't be a separation between regular modeling and plus-size modeling in the first place. Anywho, this comes with the news that IMG, an international modeling agency, has now launched a division called Brawn catering to plus-size modeling for men (say what?) - Zach Miko is the...

Amber Rose is becoming my idol. Rose has always been cool for owning her style and befriending celebs left-and-right. She looks effortless, while showing undeniable hustle. She survived Kanye West, which deserves an award or at least a cupcake. But she has gone above and beyond in the past while, by proving she is an incredible activist against slut-shaming. Rose has spoken and written about her experiences being slutshamed, which goes much earlier than any rude thing Kanye West has said about...

The Game Warden is a Montreal-made feature film written and produced by Bret MacDonald, and directed by his partner Erik Mockus. The storyline revolves around the life of a Wildlife officer who deals with his anxiety disorder after something tragic happens to his life. Having applied for grants with no luck, they decided to go the independent way and inject $5000 of their own money in the project. The end result looks like a film that most producers can't even do on a half a million dollar...
