Slackware 2.0 has just been released on ftp.cdrom.com, and should be showing
up on the mirror sites soon. Slackware is a complete distribution based on
Linus Torvalds' Linux kernel and a full set of GNU, BSD, and other applications
and utilities.
New features of version 2.0 include:
-- Linux kernel 1.0.9 (2 precompiled versions) or 1.1.18 (6 precompiled
versions) included. Source for many more versions, including most of the
recent 1.1.x patches. Precompiled versions of 1.1.10 and 1.1.16 are also
included for your enjoyment. :^)

-- more choices of bootkernel disks to support more hardware. (10 different
installation kernels, all of which now support UMSDOS-0.3a)
-- UMSDOS installation mode allows you to create a swapfile - installs on

The home FTP site for Slackware 2.0 is ftp.cdrom.com, where the binary
distribution is found in /pub/linux/slackware and the full source is found in
/pub/linux/slackware_source. Please try to go easy on this site until the
mirror sites catch up. If you can use a mirror site, do. A list of these sites
can be found on ftp.cdrom.com in /pub/linux/slackware/MIRRORS.TXT.
Development of Slackware 2.0 was sponsored by Morse Telecommunication, Inc.
Morse will be releasing Slackware Professional Linux in a few weeks. This
package will be the official Slackware CD-ROM distribution and will allow you
to easily run Slackware directly from the CDROM with a small (7-10 meg) root
partition which can be either Linux native or MS-DOS. Full, printed
documentation for Slackware will also be included in this package. Watch for
the announcement in comp.os.linux.announce.
A more complete feature list can be found in the file README.v2, found in

I've just released Slackware 2.0.2 on ftp.cdrom.com, in
/pub/linux/slackware. There have been all sorts of little fixes and
upgrades since the last version, but these are probably the most
interesting features of the new version:
-- Bootdisks that use the 1.1.54 kernel, including support for the
Adaptec 274x/284x SCSI controllers. Other alpha drivers have also
been provided for the Always IN2000, EATA SCSI, and the NEC 260
CD-ROM.
-- The X and XD disks have been upgraded to XFree86 3.1, and the
ConfigXF86 script has been updated to produce the new XF86Config
file used by XFree86 3.1.
-- Quota support is built into all of the precompiled kernels.
-- All of the extra drivers are built right into the provided kernel
source.
-- The XAP series has been completely recompiled to use the XFree86 3.1
libraries.
-- XView has been re-ported from XView3.2p1-X11R6.
-- The old XFree86 2.1.1 libraries are also included, so DOOM will run
just fine! :^)
-- Other software upgrades include: procps-0.97, less-237, Jove 4.14.10,
ftape-1.13b, ppp-2.1.2b.

Kernels up to 1.1.61 have been included. The default kernel is now 1.1.59.
"Setup" has now been modified to allow several different levels of
hard disk installation. The procedure to create a 'hybrid' Slackware
installation, where the user selects which packages are run from the
hard drive and which packages run from the CD-ROM has been greatly
improved.
Extended IDE hard drives are now properly detected.
Multisector IDE compatible drives are supported. This can result in
substantial performance increases when this feature is enabled.

SUMMARY
Morse Telecommunication today announced Slackware Professional
Linux version 2.3, an important update to the immensely popular
Slackware Professional Linux series. This release incorporates many new
and unique features which enhance the functionality of the overall package
as well as eliminating problems discovered in the 2.2 version during its
initial release on the Internet.
This release is now provided in two formats. The full version which contains
all the components mentioned herein, as well as the CDROM-only version, which
contains all but the printed user's guide. Shipping of the CDROM-only
version has already begun. The complete version with manual is expect to
ship within two weeks.

XF86-3.1.1 (X11R6) is now the default windowing system. All X binaries
have been recompiled to use the new X11R6 shared libraries. X11R6 offers
added support for many new video chipsets and extends the reliability of
support for others.
Kernels up to 1.2.8 have been included. The default kernel is now 1.2.8
"Setup" has now been modified to allow several different levels of
hard disk installation. The procedure to create a 'hybrid' Slackware
installation, where the user selects which packages are run from the
hard drive and which packages run from the CD-ROM has been greatly
improved.
Extended IDE hard drives are now properly detected.
Most popular IDE-style CDROM Drives are now detected and supported.
Multisector IDE compatible drives are supported. This can result in
substantial performance increases when this feature is enabled.
Added support for PCI systems.
Additional software packages include: httpd (for Hypertext transfers),
DOSEMU, DOOM!
