MOULTON, or GREAT MOULTON, 2½ miles S.W. of Long Stratton, and 12 miles S. of Norwich, has in its parish 98 houses, 471 souls, and 1,347a. 2r. 21p. of land, the property of several owners ; but Messrs. Thos. and Edward Betts are lords of the manor, but part of the parish is in the manors of Aslacton and Forncett. This was formerly in two parishes, called Great and Little Moulton, but the Church of the latter, (All Saints,) was demolished in 1570, and its site is now called the Sanctuary. The Church, dedicated to St. Michael, is a small edifice, and the rectory is a living valued in the King's book at £6 13s. 4d., in the patronage of W. L. W. Chute, Esq., and incumbency of the Rev. Wm. Walton, M.A., F.R.S., who has a yearly rent of £460, in lieu of tithes, and 20a. of glebe land, and resides at the rectory house, a neat building, erected about 18 years ago. The Town Land, 10a. 0r. 14p., is let for £20 a-year, and applied with the poor rates. Three acres of it were allotted at the enclosure, and part of the remainder was left in 1520, by the Rev Richard Drake, of whom it is recorded that he gave all that he had to be divided among his poor parishioners at Moulton and Griston. Samuel Hammond in 1744, left £20, which was laid out in building a cottage, the rent of which is distributed to the poor. The Rector supports a school here for about 30 children. This parish is intersected by the Eastern Union Railway.
