We've heard many heart-wrenching stories of Syrian refugees fleeing death and destruction of late but this one will make you smile.

A video posted on Facebook by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees or UNHCR is about 17-year-old Aslan from Damascus who escaped to the Greek Island of Lesbos only recently.

Aslan didn't flee alone - his dog Rose made the long journey from Syria with him, walking for 500 kms. He carried just a small backpack for his own belongings and explained, very simply,  why he brought Rose: "I love my dog".

Rose even has her own passport, and Aslan has enough food and water for her.

The Facebook post suggests that many Syrians bring their pets with them when forced to leave home. It reads: "We've seen many like him carrying their animals with them on the long journey from Syria, across the Mediterranean Sea and through Europe."

The post has been viewed over 2 million times since September 19:

I love my dog!

"Some people will ask - you have only a small bag?""Yes.""And you bring your dog?""Yes.""Why?""I love my dog!"Many animal lovers will relate to this 17-year-old boy from Damascus, Syria. And we've seen many like him carrying their animals with them on the long journey from Syria, across the Mediterranean Sea and through Europe. When forced to flee home because of war, many people would never dream of leaving their pets behind.
