Highest resolution e-reader display

New—With twice as many pixels as the previous generation, the all-new Kindle Paperwhite has an improved high-resolution 300 ppi display for crisp, laser quality text. No other e-reader offers a higher resolution display.

No glare in bright sunlight

Unlike reflective tablet and smartphone screens, Kindle Paperwhite reads like paper.

Read comfortably with one hand

Lighter than a paperback, comfortably hold Kindle Paperwhite in one hand for those times when you can't put the book down.

Charge monthly, not daily

Kindle Paperwhite won't leave you tethered to an outlet. A single charge can last up to six weeks (based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless turned off and the light setting at ten).

Won't tire your eyes in the dark

Kindle Paperwhite guides light toward the surface of the display with its built-in front light—unlike back-lit tablets that shine in your eyes—so you can read comfortably for hours without eyestrain. Adjust your screen's brightness for great reading in any light.

Next-generation reading experience

New—Kindle Paperwhite now offers Bookerly, an exclusive font crafted from the ground up for reading on digital screens. Warm and contemporary, Bookerly is inspired by the artistry of the best fonts in modern print books, but is hand-crafted for great readability at any font size.

New—Typesetting engine lays out words just as the author intended for beautiful rendering of pages. With improved character spacing and the addition of hyphenation, justification, kerning, ligatures, and drop cap support, our best-in-class typography helps you read faster with less eyestrain.

Enjoy reading with larger font sizes without compromising your reading experience. Page layout and margins automatically adapt to work well at even the largest font sizes. The new typography and layout improvements are available on over half a million books, including many best sellers, with thousands more being added every week.

Lose yourself in a book

By design, Kindle Paperwhite is purpose-built for reading and creates a sanctuary so you can lose yourself in a book. Unlike tablets and phones, Kindle doesn't distract you with social media, emails, and text messages.

Main gripes:
-Canadian Prime members are definitely getting a lot less value for our money than US Prime members.
-Doesn't support epub format.

I read online that Prime members get 1 free book per month through Kindle Owners Lending Library (KOLL), this influenced me to buy the Kindle.

I've used a Sony e-reader for years which supports epub. You can't add books as easily on my old device, and you don't get free books, so I bought the Kindle for my wife because of the better UX and ease of use.

After setting it up, we wasted 2 hours trying to find the KOLL section. Turns out, they don't have it available for Canadians. The thing that doesn't make sense is that I have Prime on Amazon.ca and Amazon.com but I still can't access KOLL.

Disappointed as it was one of the main reasons I bought this Kindle.

I've been using my kindle paperweight for a while now and have gotten great value from it. I had an early ebook reader a few years ago that just didn't work for me for various reasons and sent me back to physical books for years, but this device is exactly what I need. It's light for subway trips and to fit in my bag, and can be held with one hand for longish periods. The screen is very easy on the eyes indoor or out. The insta-download and insta-lookup of books on amz is dangerous for my wallet but very handy. Seeing other readers' notes is interesting. Overall the best compliment I can pay this kindle is probably that I don't think about it much, its now just a daily tool that I throw in my bag and go, knowing that it will do what it's supposed to well.

I also enjoy the fact that you can email word or pdf documents to the device, a it allows me to read various online texts when I'm commuting that I might otherwise be squinting at a phone screen to read.

Some of the features I hoped to use haven't come through for me. The kindle unlimited selection is very poor, from what I can see, and the fact that americans can "loan" their kindle books but we can't is very annoying, as usual it does feel like Canuck prime members are an afterthought. But those are amazon issues and don't affect the fact that I like the device a lot. The only other negative comment I'd make is that I'm getting nothing close to the battery life suggested in the product description, and have to charge it more regularly than I would ideally like. But I feel that's nitpicking a little.

This is a review of the Kindle Paperwhite launched July 2015.  Essentially. the same as the previous Kindle Paperwhite but with a fantastic upgraded (300 dpi) screen, more memory and storage it's a terrific reading device.   This review aims to describe both this product, and compare it with the other Kindle devices available to help you choose the best one for you.

Before I start, I’ve noticed several complains about Kindle not supporting the ePub format used by Canadian public libraries.  Don’t be put off, there’s a solution in the Frequently Asked Questions section below.

This review is broken up into sections so you can skip the less interesting bits.  If you’re in a hurry I’ve included a summary at the start, and a Frequently Asked Questions section at the end.

About this device
--------------------
Measuring just under 7"x 5" and 0.3" thin, it's about the size (but a lot lighter and thinner) than a standard paperback book.  Encased in a black non-slip case with a black and white 6" screen it weights just 7.5 oz and feels light enough to hold easily in one hand.

Comparing it to the previous Paperwhite (launched 2013), it looks and feels almost exactly the same, indeed there's very little difference in specification, with the biggest diffference being the increased screen clarity, although I think it's certainly not worth upgrading unless you've got a prior version of the device.

If you've a "base model" Kindle without the back-lit screen, I'd say this is a great time to upgrade.  I personally love being able to read in bed using the built in soft back-light, and like prior devices, the battery is expected to last for weeks.

What can you do with it?

It's a pleasant device to use, but it's frustrating that Amazon refuses to support the epub format. Converting is possible, but it's never flawless. Sometimes the page numbers wont convert, or the images wont display correctly. The majority of my ebooks are epub and it would be much more convenient if Amazon just supported each ebook format.

When I researched the Kindle I nowhere did it state that you had to be an American to access all the features...like borrowing books from the local library, downloading magazines and sharing books with other Kindle readers. I am a Canadian citizen and realized this after many frustrating hours trying to get books and magazines from the local library. These useful features were part of my decision to go with Kindle and if they are not available this should be clearly stated. On the up side I do enjoy reading books on the Kindle but will not recommend it to my Canadian friends unless these issues are positively addressed.
