Mumbai:  The Mumbai police suspended as many as 41 police personnel for being absent during the Ganesh festival, sending out a strong message that indiscipline would not be tolerated in the force, a senior police official said.

Due to intelligence inputs of possible terror strikes, the police had maintained a hawk-eyed vigil during the festival that ended yesterday.

"Despite reminders, 41 police personnel of the Local Arms Department of assistant sub-inspectors and below, remained absent without permission during the festival. While the entire force worked, these men were on leave," Joint Police Commissioner (Administration) Hemant Nagrale told PTI.

"Hence we suspended them yesterday, since we want to send out a message that such indiscipline would not be tolerated," the officer said.

The Mumbai police had cancelled leaves of all cops, except those who on medical leave, in order to provide security cover during the Ganesh festival.

As part of the massive security cover, about 25,000 Mumbai policemen, along with the RPF, CRPF, RAF and BSF troopers were deployed across the city.
